2010 NBA Free Agent Class; Also known as the day the Earth stopped

12:01 has now passed, so the fun begins. It’s the most excitement since the Finals, well it actually may be more exciting than the Finals. The celebrated free agent class of 2010 is going to be eligible to sign in just a few hours. Are there any good restricted free agents along with the prized unrestricted players? Where are all the top free agents going? How much are they getting? Will they be teaming up with other max contract guys? Let's find out, in countdown style, who my top 25 free agents of this spectacular free agent class.

Honorable Mention – Richard Jefferson – Unrestricted – Guard/Forward – San Antonio Spurs

This idiot, just kidding, decided to jump ship after I ranked my guys. He passed by his last year of his deal, and me and my buddies think it’s what everyone else is doing; trying to get a deal before the current collective bargaining agreement expires. Apparently “It’s all the rage.” He did walk away from $15 million!!! $15 MILLION!!! Wow.

Where to – I think he has something left to prove in San Antonio after a TERRIBLE year.

25. Derek Fisher – Unrestricted – Guard – Los Angeles Lakers

Everyone thought he was done during the season. He had career lows in pretty much every category and at times he even looked dead on the court.

Then the playoffs rolled around and he turned it back on. He even lead the Lakers to a Finals win all by himself in the forth quarter.

This leads me to believe that he still has something left in the tank. It might just be a year or two, but he was a leader in the playoffs and most importantly the Finals - where the Lakers won their 16th title.

Where to – Los Angeles Lakers – He works well with Kobe - supposedly Kobe only listens to him and Phil Jackson in the huddle- and no way he leaves with a chance at another 3 peat and his 6th title.

24. Luis Scola – Restricted – Forward – Houston Rockets

He is an under the radar player who always produces. He is best at the 4 but with Yao out he was forced to play center at times. With Yao coming back, look for a bigger year from Scola.

Where to – Houston Rockets – I can't see him leaving or the Rockets letting him leave unless they feel Jordan Hill will be better next year on a possible playoff team.

23. Mike Miller – Unrestricted – Guard – Washington Wizards

He had a down year but he was, after all, on the crappy Wizards, where everyone sucked, got traded, or was suspended. He shot poorly but expect him to regain his sweet perimeter jumpshot on a contender. It might take a while for him to find a place but a smart team like the one below will realize it is a good fit.

Where to – San Antonio Spurs – They didn't seem to have that three point threat at all last year with Roger Mason on the bench, Bruce Bowen gone, and with Richard Jefferson disappointing.

22. Tyrus Thomas – Restricted - Forward – Charlotte Bobcats

The Bulls couldn't tap into his potential so they traded away the former No. 2 overall pick. He played a little better in Charlotte but he still has to be considered a bust, that is if/when someone can bring out his potential.

We have to see what the market is for him but there are a lot of early busts coming out this year.
He is restricted so if the Bobcats like him in their future they will likely match any offers made to him.

Where to – Charlotte Bobcats – I can't see Larry Brown telling MJ to get rid of him or let him go. Brown likes his guards primarily, but let’s see if he can develop the young big man.

21. Al Harrington – Unrestricted – Forward – New York Knicks

He wasn't terrible I'm NY. Well actually everyone was bad in NY but that's beside the point. He just turned 30 and still has talent and wear left on the tires. He won't b the key piece of a team but he still could put up 20 and 10 on the score sheet.

We know he isn't coming back next season. The Knocks foolishly think they have a chance at bringing LeBron James and possibly Chris Bosh to the tea. So Harrington will be looking for a new to play on next season.

Where to – Who knows? He won't sign anywhere, at least in the East, till the "prizes" have already signed. There were trade rumors he could have gone to the Bulls at the trade deadline but to sign with them he will have to wait for the marquee guys to sign first.

20. Shannon Brown – Unrestricted – Guard – Los Angeles Lakers

The dude can jump. Period. He worked well with the Lakers the past two seasons, but he might be seeking some more money that the Lakers can't give him. The Lakers do need someone to give the team energy and with his highlight reel dunks he gives them plenty of that. He needs to work on his shooting if he wants to become a starter somewhere. But in the mean time, he might enjoy sitting behind the best player in basketball.

Where to – Los Angeles Lakers – It might all come down to money for Brown but he is in the perfect situation right now. He is winning rings and coming off the bench as a main cog for the Lakers.

19. Josh Childress – Restricted – Guard – Atlanta Hawks (rights reserved)

We haven't seen him in the league the past two season due to a contract dispute and role disagreement with the Hawks management. He got 3 years and $20+ million from a team in Greece. The Hawks still hold his rights for the NBA and they might just welcome him back with open arms since Joe Johnson will likely be leaving.

Where to – Hawks or stay in Greece – the Hawks will likely match any offer given to Childress, and Childress won't come back if the Hawks don't reward him as he feels like he deserves.

18. Matt Barnes – Unrestricted – Forward – Orlando Magic

He is a tough dude that plays stellar defense and shoots the three well. I personally don't think he liked Coach Stan Van Gundy much, but the new NBA bad boy is one of the best in the league on defense and is mentally tough – and dangerous when he gets angry.

Where to – Phoenix Suns – He oddly didn’t re-up there last year when I thought he would. He had a nice year in Orlando but I think he will be better back in that hot city.

17. Nate Robinson – Unrestricted – Guard – Boston Celtics

The little guy can score. He is a bundle of energy but gets himself in trouble when he wants the ball too much. On the Celtics he seemed to mature in the short time he was there, and being Rajon Rondo’s back up might be good for him. It might be the best thing especially with Doc Rivers returning for next year.

Where to – Boston Celtics – they are like a lot of teams this year, little player personnel. They will need some scoring off the bench.

16. Tracy McGrady – Unrestricted – Guard – New York Knicks

I changed his rank because, well there are better players on the market. He still has the talent but has to prove he is healthy. He can score at will even when he is hurt and if he returns to the D’Antoni system then he could be lethal.

(MAY 26) Teams and fans have a fascination with his scoring abilities and for good reason. But he cannot do much else and he is an injury risk. He has had microfracture surgery in his balky knee twice and has other minor procedures performed on it. He was traded to the New York Knicks at the trade deadline and if healthy will fit in with coach Mike D’Antoni’s system. He wanted the move and was finally granted it so don’t expect him to leave.

Where to – New York Knicks – McGrady stays with the Knicks unless they can lure a bigger free agent to them.

15. Marcus Camby – Unrestricted – Center – Portland Trailblazers

He’s one guy that seems to have gotten over past injuries and played at a high level with age. He may not be the great player he once was but he is still a very solid center who provides elite defense.

Where to – Boston Celtics. I got no proof, but with Kendrick Perkins out and Rasheed Wallace retiring they could use a big man.

14. John Salmons – Unrestricted – Guard – Milwaukee Bucks

He’s been underrated for the past three or four years now, yet all he does is score, score and score some more. The Bucks will miss him if they can’t convince him to stay and that is a huge if.

Where to – New Orleans Hornets. He sure would look good playing alongside Chris Paul. Marcus Thornton will move to the bench, but Salmons might average more than half of what Thornton scored. I’ll take that trade off.

13. Paul Pierce – Unrestricted – Forward – Boston Celtics

If I was convinced or even had a little bit of a thought that he was actually leaving I would have him around eight. But since I don’t….

Where to – Boston. Did you really have to ask?

12.Raymond Felton – Unrestricted – Guard – Charlotte Bobcats

(MAY 26) Again another player that does not get his due. Sure he is not really tall enough to be a shooting guard but he sure can score. You can say he has the Gilbert Arenas disease, the scorer who is masquerading around as a point guard. He has his moments as a point guard but Felton can be a special scorer and would be great for a team in need of scoring. Do not expect Felton to return to the bobcats because they have D.J. Augustine waiting.

Where to – If the Knicks can’t land Ricky Rubio or another potentially good point guard, the he could be in the fold. The Pacers could also be in on Felton. They were talking about drafting a point but took Paul George.

11. Ray Allen – Unrestricted – Guard – Boston Celtics

He was Boston’s best player after the trade deadline and was good in the playoffs. Then he was amazing in 1 game in the Finals, and then continued to be streaky throughout the series.

Where to – I saw a scenario were ESPN’s Chris Broussard had Allen signing for the mid-level exception and teaming up with LeBron and a few others in Cleveland. It sounded difficult but I liked it. Either that or back to Boston.

10. J.J. Reddick – Restricted – Guard – Orlando Magic

WHAT??? Reddick before Allen, Pierce, Felton or Salmons? I must be crazy, right? Hear me out. Reddick is a younger Allen that will cost less, and the Magic might pick up the offer. So taking the risk on signing him isn’t as bad as it sounds.

J.J. should have been starting a year or two ago but Stan Van Gundy, is, well, an idiot. If you watch, Reddick does what Allen does. He might not play defense as well but he does shoot and come off picks well like Allen. I’ll take him.

Where to – If Orlando doesn’t pick up the offer Reddick signs, I think the Celtics would love him taking over for Allen. That is if Allen goes elsewhere.

9. Carlos Boozer – Unrestricted – Forward – Utah Jazz

He won’t be the prize of any team but he will follow and find a partner in crime to go to another team.

(MAY 26) He could have opted out last year and gotten some big money even though he was coming off a knee injury. This year he is in the midst of a stacked free agent class, and seems to be screwed. He hasn’t gotten any younger, looked small and overpowered against taller guys like the Lakers big men. If he goes to the east he will be in a better situation because they have shorter big men in the conference.

Where to – Like I said, he won’t be the main prize of any team this year, and he will sign with a bigger star. He could go to any number of teams with any number of players. The choices are: stay with Utah (doubt it); go to New York; New Jersey Nets; Miami Heat; or Chicago Bulls. He will team up with: LeBron, Wade, or Joe Johnson. Wildcard, may be Phoenix. He could replace Amar’e Stoudemire, but he probably doesn’t wanna go against the Lakers big men that much.

8. David Lee – Unrestricted – Forward – New York Knicks

I love this guy. You hear how guys are always so underappreciated, but this guy is the definition of it. He is always putting up big numbers and seemingly no one notices it.

(MAY 26) I just don’t get it. The guy is a double-double machine and it always seems like no one wants to pay him or even trade for him. The guy will get you 20 points and 15 rebounds on a solid night but apparently teams just don’t like him. He should be just below a max contract.

Where to – See Carlos Boozer above, except I think he could stand his own against the Lakers.

7. Rudy Gay – Restricted – Forward – Memphis Grizzlies

I think he is leaving now. Ask me before the draft and I think the Grizz match any offer. Now? Not so much. With Xavier Henry going to Memphis I think Gay is as good as gone. He is highly talented and athletic, but he is overrated as a player because of these.

Where to – I think there are three options. The Knicks, the Clippers, and Boston. Knicks if they can’t (won’t) get LeBron; the Clippers just to get the money; or Boston if Pierce stupidly leaves. Either way, I think Gay gets the money he craves and makes a team better,

6. Dirk Nowitzki – Unrestricted – Forward – Dallas Mavericks

He supposedly isn’t leaving, which is why I don’t have him at four. He is more Robin than Batman. That is obvious due to him not winning a title with the talent owner Mark Cuban has brought in.

I bet Dirk is disappointed, though, after being knocked out the playoffs again but leaving the Mavs is no way to get that elusive title. The Mavs are set up to have a ton of cap space so they can sign Nowitzki and another max contract guy. He probably will sign for less money to get that big free agent into Dallas.

That max contract guy they have interest in is obviously LeBron James (Owner Mark Cuban was fined $100k for talking about how he has interest in James) but Wade could also be a target.

Where to – Dallas will be where he stays, probably for the rest of his career.

5. Joe Johnson – Unrestricted – Guard – Atlanta Hawks

(MAY 26) He left Phoenix for the big money and a chance to prove himself. Looks like he will do the same here. It’s been rumored by insiders that Johnson wants to play in the Big Apple. Why he would want to leave the Hawks for the lowly Knicks is confusing, but hey the Hawks were a sad group before him and now they are a perennial playoff team

Where to – He wants the spotlight in New York and the big money but he is the Knicks fifth or sixth option. There is also a rumor out there saying that Johnson will be the first free agent to sign and that team will be the Atlanta Hawks. He is perfect there, so why would he want to leave?

4. Amare Stoudemire – Unrestricted – Forward – Phoenix Suns

While Amare is an athletic freak and an amazing talent, he seems like a Robin to someone else’s Batman. He is, as I said talented, but if he wants to be a better player he needs to do two things; grab a stinkin’ rebound and learn to make a shot that isn’t a dunk. Stoudemire embarrassed himself in the Western Conference Finals when he called Lamar Odom’s brilliant Game 1 lucky. He wouldn’t have to call anyone lucky if he could make a mid range shoot or grab the ball after a miss!

He has some injury history so that likely will come into play during contract negotiations. If Amare does leave the Suns, which I don’t exactly think he will, he will probably pair up with either Wade or James.

Where to – Miami with Wade if the rumored three max contract guys don’t go there. New Jersey or Chicago so he doesn’t have to play center. Or the Knicks. Still don’t know why anyone would want to go to the crappy Knicks.

3. Chris Bosh – Unrestricted – Forward – Toronto Raptors

(MAY 26) When he was drafted they called him boom or bust. Well he is definitely BOOM. He is probably better than we give him credit because he has been trapped up there in Toronto.

Sure at times it did seem like he was lackadaisical this season, but how would you feel playing for a team going nowhere and not making the playoffs for a couple years? The guy is “uber-talented” and will sign big.

Where to – Bosh gave a list of teams he is considering to the Raptors consisting of Toronto, the Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, Miami Heat and the Los Angeles Lakers. Bosh was spotted at a Lakers playoff game, but to go to L.A. a sign-and-trade would have to be done.

Rumor – There are rumors that Bosh will follow LeBron anywhere he goes. Bosh would be a better fit with Wade in my opinion though. The most intriguing rumor is Bosh heading with Lebron to Miami with Wade. I think Bosh should go to Miami regardless.

2. LeBron James – Unrestricted – Forward – Cleveland Cavaliers

I made this bold choice a while ago. And I am going to stick to it.

(MAY 26) I’m crazy right? Sure he is talented, a two-time MVP and a freak of nature, but I have to agree with Skip Bayless on this one. James hasn’t won anything with a better cast than Wade.

Sure Wade had Shaq when they won a title but Shaq was (still is) declining in skill. And after Shaq who else on that team was better than anyone on LeBron’s team? LeBron has (had) a good team the past two years and that is evident with the back-to-back 60 win seasons.

James has the skills of a leader but the mentality of a sidekick.

Where to – There are a number of places he could go: stay in Cleveland, go to New Jersey, Chicago, the Knicks and Miami. Here are the reasons.

Cleveland Cavaliers – I don’t think he will leave his home state team and if he does he becomes public enemy No. 1. Call me crazy again, but if LeBron leaves Cleveland without a title you can consider him a bust. Yes he has all the achievements but he didn’t win the big one. He was there once and had the opportunity to go again, so it is on him not the team. He SHOULD return.

Miami Heat – Team up with Wade and dominate the eastern conference for years to come. Both stars would have to put their egos aside but it’s about winning championships right? I think Wade could (the Heat would still be his team), what about you LeBron? Oh and now they can get a third max contract guy, Bosh or Stoudemire maybe?

Chicago Bulls – James craves the spotlight and loves being compared to Michael Jordan, so why not go to MJ’s former team and team up with Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah?

New Jersey Nets – They are moving to Brooklyn and have a partial owner in his buddy Jay-Z. Doesn’t make sense because they are so far away from even being in the playoffs.

New York Knicks – The rumors were never for James to go here but the media sure does love the idea.

Rumor – See the rumor comment above with Bosh.

1. Dwayne Wade – Unrestricted – Guard – Miami Heat

I hate how everyone is talking about LeBron and not about Wade. Wade has actually won a title! Hello! I know it’s likely he stays but c’mon.

(MAY 26)Have you ever seen a player do more with less than this guy? Put it this way, if Wade wasn’t on the Heat the team probably would have been as bad the Nets, yet they were the five seed in the playoffs! Take LeBron off the Cavs and they probably would make the playoffs.

Yes Wade hasn’t always been the healthiest but he has been hearty lately (he played 77 games this year).

He also has that so called “clutch gene” that Skip Bayless always says that Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan have. Whenever there is a game winning basket in the NBA it always seems to be by Kobe or Wade not LeBron.

Love me or hate me, I’ll take Wade.

Where to – Miami Heat – I had him staying before but gave him options. Well everyone, me included, are 99% sure he is staying so I won’t even put out any other teams. With all their cap room they could sign LeBron and Bosh to pair up with Wade and could still possibly keep Michael Beasely. Another bonus for those guys, no state taxes in Florida.

NBA Mock Draft 2

Only about an hour till the NBA draft and this will help show us where all the big free agents will go. Will LeBron go to New Jersey even though they didn’t get Wall? Will Miami help itself and make some big moves to keep Wade and draw another max free agent to town? I could technically say every pick is up for trade but I won’t do that. We know there will be a lot of activity so I’ll only discuss that on a few picks. This is should be an interesting draft considering the implications and the depth overall. Well that all starts today.

1. Washington Wizards – John Wall – Point Guard – Kentucky

I still am not a big fan of the consensus no. 1 overall pick. He disappeared on offense at times and just didn’t seem like the star everyone made him out to be.

He has ridiculous athleticism and potential but he has a lot of bad qualities. He drives down the court wildly, isn’t a natural passer and cannot shoot the ball (think Rajon Rondo in shooting abilities). On top of it, he makes some of the dumbest turnovers I’ve ever seen. He averaged almost five turnovers a game and didn’t even rank in the top 100 in most efficient players in college.

His two best qualities besides the aforementioned are his great defensive skills, and his size. At 6-4 he is a tall, lanky point guard who can seemingly shut down players at will.

The real question is the city he is going to. Can Gilbert Arenas really let Wall handle the ball and help mentor him? That’s a huge question considering that Arenas was a shoot first type of point guard and was suspended after drawing a gun on another young teammate, Javaris Crittenton, along with storing guns in his locker.

He has insane potential but I don’t see a great player in him.

Expect – Derrick Rose has been the comparison but without I don’t buy it.

2. Philadelphia 76ers – Evan Turner – Shooting Guard – Ohio State

Turner has conceited the top pick in the draft to Wall. He actually refused to work out for the Wizards. Those seem to be slightly immature but I can’t say I disagree with him.

He isn’t as athletic as Wall but he is the most NBA-ready player in the draft. There aren’t as many questions about his ability. People know what they are getting in this young man, which is something special.

New Coach Doug Collins reportedly wants Derrick Favors but he shouldn’t have control over the draft. I believe that Collins was a bad choice as coach. Just because someone sounds good on TV doesn’t mean he is a good coach. I mean come on; he couldn’t win with Michael Jordan. Let me say that again. MICHAEL. JORDAN. And people think he is a good coach? Ha no way.

On a side note, Collins said he was a “builder of great teams.” There is the old fool trying to claim that he built the great Chicago teams with Jordan. I bet Collins wants credit for the Lakers winning the Championship and the Celtics getting Garnett and Allen three years ago too. Collins is a joke, and not “haha” funny, more like “durrrrrrr.”

Expect – Brandon Roy of the East.

3. New Jersey Nets – Derrick Favors – Power Forward – Georgia Tech

I’ve had mixed opinions on the freshman. I thought he was extremely overrated, then I liked, then I hated him, and now I’ve made up my mind… he is a special talent who is extremely raw that I have fallen in love with – in the right system.

If you expect Favors to be a back to the basket stud, I think you will be extremely disappointed. If you plan on using him in the Amare Stoudemire or Kenyon Martin (pre knee injuries) mold, then you have a winner.

In the transition game Favors could be a special talent along with the guys I just mentioned. He is big, explosive, fast, but still raw. He is explosive around the basket, fast in the transition game, but raw in the half court offense.

And supposedly the Nets will take Favors here because he is more “tradeable” than Wesley Johnson. They plan on packaging Favors with another pick or player for someone like Chris Bosh. We will see,

Expect – Best comparison I’ve heard was Antonio McDyess before all the injuries, along with my two comparisons above. He has been compared to Bosh but the only thing they have in common, is they both went to Georgia Tech.

4. Minnesota Timberwolves – Wesley Johnson – Small Forward – Syracuse

I’ve had Demarcus Cousins here for awhile, BUT on the Dan Patrick Show T’Wolves President David Kahn said they will take Johnson or Favors, depending on which one is available.

If the T’Wolves end up trading or plan on trading Al Jefferson, then they should take Cousins. If they plan on keeping Jefferson, then Johnson is a great pick.

Oh and Kahn said that he thinks last year’s pick – Ricky Rubio – will end up playing for Minnesota. Don’t plan on it Kahn. He should just trade the young European point guard while he still has some stock left.

Johnson seems to be a safe pick but not the typical safe pick with little upside. He has some really nice potential.

Expect – Shawn Marion when he was with the Suns

5. Sacramento Kings – DeMarcus Cousins – Center – Kentucky

To me this should be a great pick. They traded for Samuel Dalembert and dumped the disappointing Spencer Hawes recently but I would still take Cousins. They supposedly are in love with him so the Dalembert trade shouldn’t affect this pick at all.

If the Kings can keep Cousins in check and motivated they could have the best player in the draft. He is a great low post threat and can defend well too.

I actually think that Cousins was the better player at Kentucky over Wall. Just watch the tape. Cousins dominated every game while Wall wasn’t great. Plus Cousins was the guy that got the ball at the end of the game.

He was possibly the most efficient player in college according to an ESPN analyst.

Expect – Zach Randolph with less range but better down in the post.

6. Golden State Warriors – Greg Monroe – Power Forward – Georgetown

They got rid of scorer Corey Maggette, so this pick isn’t set. Even though every single analyst and mock has him here, I'm not sold. They already have a ton of long lanky SF/PF.

He got a couple years in college, so hopefully he is mature enough for Don Nelson. If not, at the first sign of trouble, Nelson will force him to the end of the bench. Maybe in the stands. Just ask the talented Anthony Randolph.

They could use a big man also but if Nelly is running things, who knows?

They reportedly want to trade this pick but send Monta Ellis and his contract with it. We will see.

Expect – heard Brad Miller thrown out there. Most laughable comparison? Chris Bosh. Not even close.

7. Detroit Pistons – Cole Aldrich – Center – Kansas

I said all of this stuff before on my last mock, but it still applies.

Remember the Pistons of a few years ago? They were being compared to the Bad Boy Pistons of the 80’s and early 90’s. Tough defensive minded teams that controlled the game. Sound familiar? Apparently General Manager Joe Dumars (who was on those Bad Boy teams) forgot that last year when he assembled a roster of little tweener girls and softies.

Maybe Dumars should just be fired. He has assembled talent but his old reliable guys have aged or been traded away. Without his old faithful’s mentoring and developing the younger guys the team will disappoint again. Their young guys haven’t developed as hoped or just don’t make sense for the team.

Aldrich is a tough defensive minded center who controls the paint on both sides of the floor. Teams won’t be able to drive the lane at will with the threat of Aldrich blocking their shots.

With the former Jayhawk, maybe some Bad Boy flavor will be injected into the lineup.

Expect – I keep hearing Joel Przybilla but I think Cole has a higher ceiling, I think he is Andrew Bogut-light.

8. Los Angeles Clippers – Al–Farouq Aminu – Small Forward/ Power Forward – Wake Forest

What a surprise, the Clippers in the Lottery. After getting the prize of last year’s draft in Blake Griffin (who broke his knee cap and didn’t even get to play in one game) the Clips are back again. “That other team from L.A.” has talent like it did a few years ago when they made the playoffs but have quickly fallen back into irrelevance.

I actually think he has one of the highest potentials to bust. I just can’t seem to fall in love with him. I’ve even left him off my draft board because I forget about him.

I love Xavier Henry here but apparently no one thinks he will go this high.

I don’t think it really matters who we have here because this pick is reportedly up for trade. There were reports that Chicago will package 17 and Luol Deng to get this pick. Very interesting. But that won’t happen with Chicago trading Kirk Hinrich and the 17th pick to the Wizard.

Expect – I heard Marvin Williams or Josh Smith. I doubt that on both accounts.

9. Utah Jazz (from the New York Knicks) –Luke Babbitt – Small Forward – Nevada

Sloan has had success in the past with sweet shooting wings. Babbitt will be playing next to possibly the best point guard in the league in Deron Williams so I like this pick a little more because of him.

Problem is, don’t expect Babbitt to guard anyone. He can score but his defensive abilities are the equivalent to a kindergartener defending Kobe.

Regardless, I think Kyle Korver is a free agent and the Jazz need shooters.

Expect – Adam Morrison or Danillo Gallinari

10. Indiana Pacers – Gordon Hayward – Small Forward – Butler

I think Utah will regret taking Babbitt over Hayward but Hayward fits the Pacers “pick the best white guy” technique here.

I'm not meaning that as a knock on Hayward because I believe he is more athletic and talented than everyone believes with more potential than most believe. He could even be taken higher.

Hayward probably should have stayed at Butler for one more year, maybe even two, but with a year learning from the pros and controlled playing time, Hayward could become a star.

Expect - Heyward has been compared to Larry Bird – which is reach because Bird was utterly dominate at Indiana State, while Heyward was just a budding star at Butler – which is a fun comparison, BUT I believe he will be a better Mike Miller.

11. New Orleans Hornets – Paul George – Small Forward – Fresno State

Haven’t heard of him? That’s ok. The 6’ 8” “2” guard from Fresno State can really light it up and after Whiteside may just be the biggest “high-risk, high-reward” prospect in the draft.

Hopefully this pick pleases Chris Paul. Paul has been saying he wants to stay in New Orleans but wants to win now.

Expect – A young Tracy McGrady

12. Memphis Grizzlies – Patrick Patterson – Power Forward – Kentucky

Patterson could have been a higher pick last year or even if he had come out after his freshman year, but choose to stay in school.

He is an offensive minded power forward – and is willing to be unselfish – who will not play much defense at first but he should learn fast.

His pro potential has started to fade but here he is a solid value who could be a starter for a long time.

Expect – Carl Landry

13. Toronto Raptors – Eric Bledsoe – Point Guard – Kentucky

Bledsoe – my highest rated point guard – is the fourth Wildcat taken in the first and for good reason. The kid has skills. He has that “NBA ready body,” has toughness, can play defense and can score in bunches.

He might not be a true point guard yet but there are a couple of point guards he can learn from in Toronto.

Would have been a top five or10 pick if he stayed at Kentucky for just one more year.

Expect – I like him as a Tim Hardaway type player or even a Raymond Felton

14. Houston Rockets – Ekpe Udoh – Power Forward – Baylor

I constantly got Udoh and Aminu mixed up and probably will still. They both are lengthy tweeners and both have weird names. Udoh is known as a good defender with nice shot blocking abilities and uses his 6’ 10” frame and long wingspan to his advantage.

Udoh will form a nice defensive front court tandem with Luis Scola or Yao Ming, when he returns from injury.

Expect – Theo Ratliff or Serge Ibaka

15. Milwaukee Bucks – Xavier Henry – Shooting Guard – Kansas

He and George could actually switch positions in this draft. He was my personal reach in the draft. I think he will be better than his stock at the moment. It is the NBA where they draft purely on potential, and I think he has great potential.

Henry has a NBA ready body and has that desired range. He was at one point rated higher by talent evaluators than John Wall. He did have a slightly less than inspiring freshman year but so did most of the team. I tend to agree with them.

Maybe another year in college and he could have been the top overall pick. He could even rise up the boards if teams realize how much of a talent this guy is.

He isn’t great at creating his shot yet but he wouldn’t have to with the talent around him.

Even with the Bucks trading for Chris Douglas–Roberts and Corey Magette they supposedly will take Henry here.

Expect – I'm thinking Michael Redd and even saw a Paul Pierce comp.

16. Minnesota Timberwolves – James Anderson – Shooting Guard – Oklahoma State

He is a bit of an enigma. He rises one minutes drops the other. Let’s just say he could go anywhere from 11 to 26. Who knows what teams think of him the next minute?

Anderson is a top-five talent but had a rough season at Oklahoma State, dropping his stock. Even though he isn’t crazy athletic, he seems to have a high ceiling.

The T’Wolves need scoring so this pick with Johnson should help.

I'm expecting the T’Wolves to package this pick and the 23rd pick to move up so take this pick with a grain of salt.

Expect – Brandon Rush seems fair.

17. Washington Wizards – Jordan Crawford – Shooting Guard – Xavier

Remember that movie last summer that had a college player dunking on LeBron James? It was hidden for a little bit but finally was revealed. It was grainy, but we know who dunked on James; that would be the Xavier wingman.

Again a raw player but this team is young and will pick up the slack. Put Crawford in the backcourt with John Wall and you have a highly athletic, explosive, and nice scoring pair. He could have used another year at Xavier but he is a first round draft pick so no big deal I guess.

I had the Bulls taking him here but I’ll stick with him here. He can come off the bench from behind Gilbert Arenas for a year or two and then we will talk.

Expect – Haven’t heard any good comparisons that I liked. No clue at this point.

18. Oklahoma City Thunder – Solomon Alabi – Center – Florida State

The Heat stupidly traded back so they wouldn’t have to pay for a draft pick. Oklahoma City wanted a big and everyone believes this is the pick

Alabi is long, Lanky and should be great defensively. He is raw and will take time to develop but the Thunder have time.

Expect – Hasheem Thabeet

19. Boston Celtics – Avery Bradley – Shooting Guard – Texas

Ray Allen may be on the way out and the Celtics NEED to get younger. Bradley will be a nice piece and could even start if Allen does leave.

He is super fast and could give Rondo a break. Bradley could also give the Celtics a dynamic scoring option that they needed in say... Game 7 of the NBA Finals?

Expect – Shannon Brown

20. San Antonio Spurs – Damian James – Small Forward – Texas

He is a little bit like DeJuan Blair; in that he is that typical Spurs pick. He can defend pretty much any player on the floor and he can score. In his time in Texas it seemed like he never had any designed plays for him, yet he still scored in bunches.

James maybe the most underrated player in the draft, but it seems like it’s been that way since he came to Texas with Kevin Durant. His play has never gotten the recognition it has deserved, but the Spurs will take it and place him at small forward. Say bye bye to Richard Jefferson guys and girls.

Expect – Luc Richard Mbah a Moute or a shorter and more athletic Blair.

21. Oklahoma City Thunder – Kevin Seraphin – Power Forward - Cholet (France)

Seraphin is in the Mold of Serge Ibaka – who the Thunder already have – but with a lower ceiling. The Thunder have no immediate needs so they could stash him in Europe for a year or two.

Seraphin didn’t start playing basketball until later in his young life which has lead to him being extremely raw. He is inconsistent and at times not focused, but is athletic and has good hands. Patience will be needed for a couple years.

Expect – Jordan Hill

22. Portland Trailblazers – Daniel Orton – Center – Kentucky

Greg Oden hasn’t exactly panned out yet but that hasn’t all been his fault. He has been injured a lot so far, so the Blazers need to find a new project center to work with.

Orton barely played at Kentucky, but that has to do with that big guy DeMarcus Cousins. He would have started at virtually any other university besides Kentucky and Kansas due to his immense talent and ceiling.

Though he is very raw, he could be in the same class that Chris Bosh found himself in
when he was drafted; a boom or bust type of player worth the risk.

Expect – A better Erick Dampier, when Dampier was good.

23. Minnesota Timberwolves – Hassan Whiteside – Center – Marshall

They grabbed Anderson and Johnson first and now they take a big man with their third and final pick of the first round. Al Jefferson could be on his way out of town.

This pick is likely to be traded anyways.

Expect – Marcus Camby–light

24. Atlanta Hawks – Dominique Jones – Combo Guard – South Florida

He is a natural scorer who can handle the rock. The Hawks need that considering that Joe Johnson is all but prostituting himself to the Knicks.

Expect – I compare him to Jordan Crawford in this draft. I could be wrong though.

25. Memphis Grizzlies – Lance Stephenson – Guard – Cincinnati

He could end up slipping due to some “issues.” So what is holding him back is character issues and questions about his me first personality.

He didn’t have a truly inspiring season at Cincinnati but he has some nice scoring potential.

Expect – Heard Isaiah Rider thrown out there.

26. Oklahoma City Thunder – Tibor Pleiss – Center - Germany

Also their third and final pick. I seriously doubt they keep this pick. They could take the German center and let him develop in Europe like they will let Seraphin.

Expect – No idea, but he is big and physical, so unlike most European big men.

27. New Jersey Nets – Terrico White – Shooting Guard – Ole Miss

White is an elite athlete to put with and already athletic team. Like the incumbent Nets, White is extremely inconsistent player but is gifted with incredible talent. He disappears in games, but when focused he is a special player.

If the Nets sign a player like Joe Johnson, LeBron James or another big time free agent, this pick is mute or trade bait.

Expect – See Jones and Crawford

28. Memphis Grizzlies – Elliot Williams – Point Guard/ Shooting Guard – Memphis

He is a good story. He signed with Duke and then his mother got sick. He requested a transfer to Memphis and Duke obliged. Then the NCAA allowed a waiver for Williams to play immediately due to his mother’s illness.

He is an unreliable shooter but this pick will like be traded too.

Expect – Heard Rodney Stuckey

29. Orlando Magic – Darington Hobson – Combo Guard/ Small Forward – New Mexico

Supposedly Hobson has been promised a first round selection. It has to be here, I don’t see him going much higher.

He could give Jameer Nelson, Vince Carter or any number of players.

Expect – Shaun Livingston

30. Washington Wizards – Grevis Vasquez – Shooting Guard – Maryland

They got Wall so who cares? Vasquez was a great player at Maryland and should be a nice piece for the Wizards.

Expect – Josh Howard maybe?

18 June 2010

NFL Draft analysis

Yes this is more than a month over due but due to school and work I was unable to put a lot of time into this. I had previously done a smaller analysis for the Antelope Valley Examiner but this is the full in-depth look into the first two rounds and certain picks that I find intriguing.

1ST ROUND

1. St. Louis Rams – Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma – The ultimate system quarterback. I have to admit I’ve never liked him but I still know my football. He is accurate and has a decent arm. BUT no QB from OU has been good. If Rhett Bomar had not been kicked off the team 4 or so years ago we would be like, Sam Bradford Who? The Rams needed a franchise cornerstone and a future quarterback. Was it the right choice though? Doubt it. Next year’s draft is loaded with better QB prospects like Andrew Luck, Ryan Mallett or Jake Locker.

Should have taken Ndamakong Suh.

Grade – C+

2. Detroit Lions – Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska – Generally thought to be the number 1 overall prospect in the draft. Could have used an offensive tackle to protect Matt Stafford, admittedly, but still a great pick. Russell Okung or Trent Williams would have been a good pick but you can’t go wrong with Suh. Their defensive line should be the focal point of their defense and hopefully further their rise.

They took the right guy in Suh.

Grade – A+

3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma – A great pick for the Bucs to return to their famous “Tampa 2” defense. Elite pass rushing defensive tackle will help the defense return to glory days. They also buffed it up in the second round (more on that later). McCoy has been compared to Warren Sapp and if the comparison is right, then the Bucs will have another dominant DT like that had in Sapp years ago.

Grade – A

4. Washington Redskins – Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma – This pick was all about protecting newly acquired Donovan McNabb. Russell Okung would have been a safer pick, but the more athletic Williams will fit the ‘Skins zone blocking scheme better. Hopefully Mike Shannahan found his left tackle of the future like when picked Ryan Clady three years ago.

Grade – B

5.
Kansas City Chiefs – Eric Berry, SS, Tennessee – A lot of people thought they would go offensive tackle Russell Okung or even Bryan Bulaga, but the Chiefs did the smart thing and took the playmaking safety in the Ed Reed mold. Safeties obviously aren’t taken this high usually but Berry is a special talent that will be a pro-bowler sooner not later. The Chiefs secondary now seems to be loaded especially with second round pick (see later).

Grade – A

6. Seattle Seahawks – Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State – The best tackle in the draft fell unexpectedly right into the Seahawks lap. Walter Jones finally announced his retirement and Okung has the potential to be a top 5 or 10 tackle. The ‘Hawks needed line help and Okung will anchor it for at least the next decade years.

Grade – A–

7. Cleveland Browns – Joe Haden, CB, Florida – The Browns needed a lot and a cover corner was certainly one of them. Haden had been predicted to go to the Browns for a long time but then when he ran a slower than expected 40 time at the combine. He was injured but teams didn’t believe him. Then at his pro day he ran a lot better, so he shot back up the boards. Some other needs could have been addressed sooner though, such as a pass rusher, wide out or safety.

Grade – B

8. Oakland Raiders – Rolando McClain, ILB, Florida – What a surprise, an actual smart pick. The Raiders are expected to transition to the ever increasingly popular 3-4 defense, and McClain is a perfect fit. They ended up trading away Kirk Morrison (stupidly) but McClain will take over for him quite easily. Some people thought this was a little too high for him he is a perfect fit for the Black Hole.

Grade – B+

9. Buffalo Bills – C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson – No this is not a reach but it sure is confusing. The Bills already have a couple capable running backs in Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch but a horrid line. Yet again, neither is Spiller who is UBER-Talented. He is ridiculously fast and quick. He is shifty yet powerful at the same time. He doesn’t need a great line to make him look good but he will need one that can at least prevent a lineman from pounding him in the backfield. Line was a bigger the need, but Spiller is a special talent.

Grade- C+

10. Jacksonville Jaguars – Tyson Alualu, DT, California – THE definition of a reach. Alualu is a nice player but a late first / early second round talent. Should have tried harder to trade back or just plainly pick better. That’s all I can truly say on this pick. I could bag on it but I think everyone already gets it from the first sentence.

Grade – D+

11. San Francisco 49ers (via Denver) – Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers – They traded up for a top five talent but did so confusingly. Davis would have been there at their original pick of 13. They did give up quite a bit to move up two spots so again I’m dumbfounded. Otherwise, Davis is the future franchise left tackle and will keep Alex Smith upright for once in his disappointing career. Probably should have just stayed at 13 unless there was an unexpected jumper to get Davis

Grade – B+

12. San Diego Chargers (via Miami) – Ryan Matthews, RB, Fresno State – A great pick but traded too much to go too high, but Seattle was a threat to take Matthews since Spiller was taken earlier than expected. Will start from day one and pick up were LaDainian Tomlinson fell off three years ago. Matthews or Spiller would have been a good fit but Matthews will do quite fine. The Fresno State product will get the bulk of the carries; I'm predicting only around 250 though, due to the Chargers becoming a pass first offense.

Grade – B

13. Philadelphia Eagles (via Denver) – Brandon Graham, DE, Michigan – When they traded up everyone thought Earl Thomas was the pick, and well, he should have been. Secondary help was a must and they just blew it like the Jags. Graham is an overrated talent who fits their system but I’m predicting he will bust. Terrible job Philly.

Grade – C –

14. Seattle Seahawks – Earl Thomas, SS, Texas – Well where the Eagles messed up, the ‘Hawks pick great. A playmaking safety is just what the doctor ordered in Seattle. Just don’t tell Taylor Mays that. Thomas could also play corner for Seattle need be but he will be a great player at safety. This pick will be interesting since Mays went to division rival SF later in the draft. We will be able to compare these two for years.

Grade – A

15. New York Giants – Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida – Injuries and bad signings doomed the Giants defensive line last year. Chris Canty was injured all year and really didn’t go to a system that he fits. JPP is an athletic freak and will make Osi Umenyiora available for trade regardless of what the Giants say, because it will happen. It might take time for Pierre-Paul to live up to his potential but man he sure is a special talent.

Grade – B

16. Tennessee Titans – Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech – Generally rated the top defensive end in the draft and he slipped for some odd reason. He could have been taken even by the Browns at 7 but again he oddly slipped. It is reported that the Titans wanted JPP but Morgan is a great consolation prize. JPP is an athletic freak but Morgan proved that he isn’t a stiff; he had the highest vertical jump by a DL/ OLB, best to my knowledge.

Grade – B+

17. San Francisco 49ers – Mike Iupati, OG, Idaho – A mauling giant of a man. Iupati could play any number of positions on the line and will quickly be an All-Pro on some position. Watch for the Niners to run the ball A LOT. I personally like Iupati more than most because I think his raw potential is limitless. But again, that’s just me. He should at least be a multiple time pro-bowler.

Grade – A

18. Pittsburgh Steelers – Maurkice Pouncey, C/OG, Florida – The best center prospect in the past 10 years was a typical Steelers pick. There were other needs but Pouncey was too much of a value and need to let pass by. Pouncey should start from day one, making one of the Steelers OL very mad. And I'm tired of the Roethlisberger situation, no they shouldn’t have drafted a QB, and no he isn’t as bad as many other pro athletes (I'm looking at you Pac-Man)

Grade – B+

19. Atlanta Falcons – Sean Weatherspoon, LB, Missouri – Secondary help was probably more of a ”pressing” need or a pass rusher but the linebacker from Mizzou is an excellent pick to go along side tackling machine Curtis Lofton. I don’t believe that Dunta Robinson will be back to his old form from a couple years ago so I might have gone with the secondary help but Weatherspoon should be able to cover the TE’s at the very least.

Grade – B

20. Houston Texans – Kareem Jackson, CB, Alabama – Sorry but Jackson was not the second best corner in the draft, that title belongs to Kyle Wilson. Watch film of Jackson and you will see him being burned on too many plays. Whenever I watched film of ‘Bama, say against Florida, it seemed like they picked on Jackson and stayed clear of Javier Arenas. Sure he is more pro ready but I don’t see his ceiling as high as everyone else is saying.

Grade – C–

21. Cincinnati Bengals – Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma – Look at every great team in the league today and you will see that every single one of them has a good/great tight end. The Colts have Dallas Clark, the Jets have Keller, the Packers have Finley, the ‘Boys have Witten, Atlanta has Gonzalez, etc. Carson Palmer should be an extremely happy man now that he has a legit over the middle and down the field threat at TE.

Grade – B+

22. Denver Broncos (via New England) – Demaryius Thomas, WR, Georgia Tech – Not as talented as Dez Bryant but the Broncos didn’t want another so called “diva.” Thomas needs work but is really talented. All the luck to him but with Brandon Marshall gone, he is now going to be compared to possibly the best wide out in the league. Can he handle the pressure?

Grade – C+

23.
Green Bay Packers – Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa – This was a great fit for the Packers. They stayed in their spot and a good talent fell into their lap. Bulaga would have been a reach in the top 10 but here is a great pick. The talk of him going to KC at five was utterly appalling, but here is a good value and need pick.

Grade – B

24. Dallas Cowboys (via Denver through Philadelphia) – Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State – Easily a top 10 talent. Jerry Jones jumped the Ravens because he was not risking a Randy Moss scenario again. By the way, Roy Williams, watch out and maybe pack a bag or two. Williams is acting like he has nothing to worry about, but trust me, he has a lot to be worried about. All the talk about Bryant being a diva was bogus anyways. I predict him to be excellent and very little drama in Big D.

Grade – A

25. Denver Broncos (via Baltimore) – Tim Tebow, QB, Florida – I like Tebow but Denver has too many needs for a developmental QB. Tebow has a chance to be good but I don’t believe that there were teams trying to trade up to take him in the first, plain and simple.

Grade – C–

26. Arizona Cardinals – Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee – Arizona was extremely lucky to get the third best defensive tackle in the draft. Williams slide to a team that desperately needed a young nose tackle. The reason he slide was because many teams were skeptical about his only one good year at UT, but he is a great pick here. I had him going top 15 or even top 10.

Grade – B+

27. New England Patriots (via Dallas) – Devin McCourty, CB, Rutgers – A lot of people say this is a typical Pats pick. Umm hello? Did they forget that Kyle Wilson was on the board? McCourty has potential and a lot of speed but this is not a “typical Pats pick.” They usually are smart about who they pick but where was their genius here?

Grade – C

28. Miami Dolphins (via San Diego) – Jared Odrick, DE, Penn State – A prototypical 3-4 defensive end. Miami bolster that defensive line which is that typical “Bill Parcells pick.” With the Marshall trade this is the best pick they could have made. They needed a young DE after the released the disappointing Matt Roth and having the aging Vonnie Holliday.

Grade – B

29.
New York Jets – Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise State – The Jets were reportedly trying to trade back until Kyle Wilson fell into their laps. Former Jets and current Browns coach Eric Mangini said that Wilson is the only Darrelle Revis in this draft class. Mangini, by the way, was the one that drafted Revis. So with a ridiculous secondary and an already crazy good defense, the Jets will be a very popular Super Bowl pick.

Grade – A+

30. Detroit Lions (via Minnesota) – Jahvid Best, RB, California – The Lions traded up four spots to get Best just in case Kevin Smith’s ACL tear is not fully healed. The lightning quick Best has some injury questions of his own though. Nowadays, two backs are more popular than a full time feature back.

Grade – B–

31. Indianapolis Colts – Jerry Hughes, DE, TCU – The possible heir apparent to either Dwight Freeney or Robert Mathis, will start out as the third rusher. Typical great pick by the Colts. He will start out as a third rusher but Freeney has become injury prone and both he and Mathis aren’t getting any younger.

Grade – A–

32. New Orleans Saint – Patrick Robinson, CB, Florida State – Apparently the Super Bowl champs do not have enough corners. Or maybe last year’s first round pick, Malcolm Jenkins, will be moved to safety. Either way, Robinson might have been had in the third round.

Grade – C

2ND ROUND

33. St. Louis Rams – Rodger Saffold, OT, Indiana – This could actually be the left tackle of the future for the Rams. Last year’s pick, Jason Smith, was injured much of last year and had concussions, which also lead people to believe that his career might be in jeopardy due to s concussion syndrome. Saffold will now be trusted to protect the new million(s) dollar man.

Grade – A–

34. Minnesota Vikings (via Detroit) – Chris Cook, CB, Virginia – Over drafted and overvalued. They need a CB due to Cedric Griffin’s knee obliteration, but maybe they shouldn’t have traded with the Lions and just take Robinson. Cook is in the Deion Sanders mold and not in the good way. He isn’t as good a cover corner but he definitely won’t tackle like Deion.

Grade – C–

35. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Brian Price, DT, UCLA – The Bucs continued to bolster their DL with a projected first round pick that slipped. Price and McCoy will shred through offensive lines and cause problems for years.

Grade – B+

36. Kansa City Chiefs – Dexter McCluster, WR/RB/KR, Ole Miss – OHH the possibilities for the lowly Chiefs. They could have taken a NT in mount Cody, a rushing OLB in Sergio Kindle, a TE in Rob Gronkowski, or even other WRs in Golden Tate, Arrelious Benn, or even Mike Williams (see him later). The NFL is a copy cat league and McCluster will be used in the Wes Welker mold. I would have rather had any of the guys previously named. (Yes I am a Chiefs fan).

Grade – C+

37. Philadelphia Eagles (via Washington) – Nate Allen, S, South Florida – I guess the Iggles make up for not taking Thomas in the first but still should have been used on a different player, say Koa Misi, if they hadn’t stupidly taken Graham in the first.

Grade – B–

38. Cleveland Browns – T.J. Ward, S, Oregon – They try to shore up their secondary with a safety to replace Brodney Pool, but reach here. They might have been able to take Ward in the third or fourth. And no I don’t give Holmgren the benefit of the doubt. He didn’t do a great job drafting in Seattle.

Grade – C

39. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (via Oakland) – Arrelious Benn, WR, Illinois – Tampa starts to get QB Josh Freeman some help here. Benn had slipped because he had a down year due to no fault of his own (Juice Williams stunk up the joint). He has the tools now it’s up to him to stay healthy and be focused.

Grade – A

40. Miami Dolphins (via Seattle through San Diego) – Koa Misi, DE/OLB, Utah – Again can you say typical Parcells pick? Sure Kindle was on the board but Kindle has knee issues and Parcells loves his little projects.

Grade – B+

41. Buffalo Bills – Torell Troup, NT, Central Florida – The Bills needed a NT so they got one. Was it the right one though? Ummm with Mount Cody, Linval Joseph and Cam Thomas still on the board? I’ll take that as a no…..

Grade – C

42. New England Patriots (via Chicago through Tampa Bay and Oakland) – Rob Gronkowski, TE, Arizona – Had he come back next year he would have been a first rounder but he is a Patriot so who cares? He will have competition from Aaron Hernandez (see later) but if his back is healthy he will start.

Grade – B

43. Baltimore Ravens (via Miami through Denver) – Sergio Kindle, OLB, Texas – Must I say it again? Typical Ravens pick. Suggs had a down year last year and he needs someone to start opposite him (I like Kindle more than their other guys). The Ravens consistently draft amazing despite not having a first since they traded it away.

Grade – B+

44. Oakland Raiders (via Jacksonville through Patriots) – LaMarr Houston, DT, Texas – He might have been a slight reach, maybe an early third round pick, but I can’t complain. It was still a good smart pick.

Grade – B

45. Denver Broncos – Zane Beadles, OT, Utah – This pick was a little odd. Did they need help on the OL? Umm yea. But I think there were quite a few others I would have chosen before Beadles. Then again they do need an OT since Clady could be out for a while.

Grade – C+

46. New York Giants – Linval Joseph, DT, Eastern Carolina – Another DL prospect. Their defense was pretty pathetic last year but that was mainly due to injuries. This may be a little over the top. They could have used a little secondary help, mainly a corner.

Grade – B–

47. Arizona Cardinals (via Tennessee through New England) – Daryl Washington, LB, TCU – They lost their best linebacker, Karlos Dansby, in free agency but I think that Washington will make some people forget all about Dansby.

Grade – B+

48.
Carolina Panthers – Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame – Wow did they luck into a great pick after not having a first rounder. I think Clausen will have a better career, and not just because he is in a better situation.

Grade – A++

49. San Francisco 49ers – Taylor Mays, S, USC – Boy was he mad about not being picked in the first by his old coach. I found it comical. Instead of talking about it, maybe he should prove that he should have been the pick.

Grade – B+

50. Kansas City Chiefs (via Atlanta) – Javier Arenas, DB, Alabama – again an odd pick for the Chiefs. Not going to lie, I was pissed. KC needs depth in their secondary but Arenas better be their starting safety opposite Berry to warrant this pick. He especially better pan out since KC released Bernard Pollard who was great in Houston. Terrence Cody was still available along several linebackers, and even some wide outs or tight ends.

Grade – C+

51. Minnesota Vikings (via Houston) – Toby Gerhart, RB, Stanford – Sure I'm a hater of Adrian Peterson (the most overrated running back in recent memory), but this pick did not make much sense to me… at first. AP is bound to get hurt with his running style, and has a complete fumblitis thing going on. I’ll take Gerhart. He could start on A LOT of teams, believe me.

Grade – B

52. Pittsburgh Steelers – Jason Worilds, LB, Virginia Tech – James Harrison is on the wrong side of 30, but Worilds isn’t on his level. Plus he will have to sit for a while.

Grade – D+

53. New England Patriots – Jermaine Cunningham, DE, Florida – Ok so they wanted a big DE from Florida but they didn’t get the right one…

Grade – D–

54. Cincinnati Bengals – Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida – this is the guy who the Pats should have taken. Usually they don’t care about character issues but who knows. Bengals get a great talent but with issues. The Bengals obviously don’t care about issues.

Grade – B+

55. Dallas Cowboys (via Philadelphia) – Sean Lee, LB, Penn State – They needed a linebacker to start alongside Bradie James since Bobby Carpenter never panned out. But how did they get the Eagles to make a trade with them?

Grade – B–

56.
Green Bay Packers – Mike Neal, DT, Purdue – They had a great defense last year but their defensive line is aging. B.J. Raji was a nice and will be a great player soon but they need more youth on the DL. Secondary help would have been nice though, considering that their two starting corners are in their early to mid 30’s.

Grade – C+

57. Baltimore Ravens – Terrence Cody, NT, Alabama – Sheesh their line is HUGE with Haloti Ngata at DE. Cody is a pure NT (he weighs almost 350 pounds!) and he could end up starting next year.

Grade – A

58. Houston Texans (via Arizona through New England) – Ben Tate, RB, Auburn – The tools look nice but he didn’t produce much at Auburn. I would rather try and give Steve Slaton one more shot. Tate probably busts.

Grade – D+

59. Cleveland Browns (via Dallas through Philadelphia) – Montario Hardesty, RB, Tennessee – Look at Tate above but with knee issues.

Grade – D

60. Seattle Seahawks (via San Diego) – Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame – He is a good receiver and probably underrated, BUT he seems to be like the receivers they already have except shorter.

Grade – C+

61.
New York Jets – Vlad Ducasse, G, Massachusetts – He better pan out for his own sake. The Jets released Alan Faneca because they got this mean mammoth man. He plays with a mean streak which will be perfect for their run game.

Grade – B+

62. New England Patriots (via Minnesota through Houston) – Brandon Spikes, ILB, Florida – He slipped after questions about his athleticism, but he looks like one of those players that players better than his measurables. This was the Pats second of three Gators and I think the second two (Spikes and see later) will be the better ones.

63. Indianapolis Colts – Pat Angerer, LB, Iowa – What a perfect football name. They needed linebacker depth and a new young project and Angerer fits the bill. He was drafted a little early but the Colts seem to do that. They pick they guy they like and don’t care what anyone has to say about it.

Grade – C+

64. New Orleans Saints – Charles Brown, OT, USC – How did he slip this far? He could have gone as early as the Packers in the first round! He doesn’t have an amazing ceiling but he could make a couple pro bowls.

INTRIGUING PICKS

These picks I find, well, intriguing. They all seem to be nice risks, but since they aren’t first or second rounders, I won’t be giving them a grade. Many of these guys could become better than even first rounders and many won’t.

3RD Round

69. Oakland Raiders – Jared Veldheer, OT, Hillsdale – In his four years at Hillsdale he never allowed a sack. Pretty impressive. The Raiders could use line help, with his performance, it looks like they have a good pick here. He sure is a giant too. Nearly 6’9”, the Raiders sure do like those measurable guys.

70. Baltimore Ravens – Ed Dickinson, TE, Oregon – Todd Heap isn’t getting any younger and Dickinson is a good project. He has good size, strength and speed to help out Joe Flacco immediately.

77. Tennessee Titans – Damian Williams, WR, USC – The dude is very skilled and athletic. He isn’t that great of a down the field threat due to his so-so first step, but has good to great straight line speed.

78.
Carolina Panthers – Brandon LaFell, WR, LSU – This is a problem area for the Panthers. They have never been able to find a good WR to pair with superstar Steve Smith. They tried Dwayne Jarrett, and he hasn’t lived up to expectations. He will have another shot but LaFell will at least be their new slot receiver.

84. Cincinnati Bengals – Jordan Shipley, WR, Texas – they sure were going for weapons for Carson Palmer weren’t they? In the first they took Gresham, and later they took more WR’s. Shipley is purely a slot receiver in the Welker mold, and has great route running skills, hands, and really good speed.

85. Cleveland Browns – Colt McCoy, QB, Texas – Holmgren got his QB later than he thought he would. The entire time Holmgren said he wouldn’t take a QB early if at all. Well we aren’t idiots Mike.

87. Denver Broncos – Eric Decker, WR, Minnesota – He probably should have gone into baseball but Decker sure is a special “athlete.” I wouldn’t bet against him being a really NFL player.

4th ROUND

99. St. Louis Rams – Mardy Gilyard, WR, Cincinnati – I really don’t know how he slipped so far after the past two seasons. He sure is fast, quick, and explosive. He can return kicks or play slot. Special explosiveness, that oddly fell for no apparent reason.

100. Minnesota Vikings – Everson Griffen, DE, USC– A man amongst boys in size and talent dating back to his days in high school. He has character issues, which were likely the reasons that he slipped, and sometimes doesn’t play up to his talent. If Ray Edwards doesn’t stop complaining about contract issues, Griffen could end up playing a lot.

101. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Mike Williams, WR, Syracuse – From what insiders are saying, Williams could already be THE steal of the draft. He has had some odd issues, such as quitting the football team, but he is a first round talent. If he turns his life around and focuses on football, expect him to be a multiple time ALL-PRO.

106. Oakland Raiders – Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland – The typical workout warrior. He is a monster in size, strength, speed etc. But he doesn’t play up to his size and talent, and he doesn’t play with good technique. He is extremely raw but he might just be the most gifted talent in this entire draft.

112.
New York Jets – Joe McKnight, RB, USC – He was the No. 1 recruit in the nation a few years ago and just has never live up to the ridiculous talent he has. He has shown flashes of his game breaking talent but he needs to put it out on the field consistently. If he does, then expect the next big thing.

113. New England Patriots – Aaron Hernandez, TE, Florida – A positive marijuana test at the combine dropped his stock severely. He could have been picked at least in the second round but had to be stupid (the Pats take these guys consistently; they took Brandon Tate last year after he did the same idiotic thing). He will team with Gronkowski to form a very talented TE duo and could even play TE the way Dallas Clark does in Indy.

114. Baltimore Ravens – Dennis Pitta, TE, BYU – Some more competition for Heap and Dickinson. He actually could have been taken ahead of Dickinson. That competition will be interesting.

126. Dallas Cowboys – Akwasi Owusu–Amsah, DB/KR, IUPUI – He is extremely interesting and not just because of his name. He dominated at the Division II level while he played corner, safety, returner punts and kickoffs but now is the true test. Is he that good or was it just the poor competition?

128. Detroit Lions – Jason Fox, OT, Miami (Fl.) – Obviously this is when picks are disappointing talents, character issues, etc. Fox isn’t entirely disappointing and doesn’t have character issues, but he did need major knee surgery, which in turn dropped his stock. If he can get healthy, he could be Detroit’s Left Tackle for years to come.

131. Cincinnati Bengals – Rodderick Muckelroy, LB, Texas – The Bengals typically like their linebackers from USC but Muckelroy is more than capable and only slipped due to he is slightly undersized. He was productive at UT and should continue in Cincy.

5th ROUND

134. Philadelphia Eagles – Ricky Sapp, DE, Clemson – This is another case of injury dropping a player’s stock. He was productive but his knees are shot. If he can get healthy he could be a great pass rushing weapon for the Iggles.

146. San Diego Chargers – Cam Thomas, NT, North Carolina – He was projected to go in the second round at the minimum but obviously that didn’t happen. His work ethic has been called into question along with his actual talent. He is big and strong but will need to be coachable to start in the NFL. If the Chargers are lucky, Thomas could be their next All-PRO nose tackle since they released Jamal Williams.

155. Arizona Cardinals – John Skelton, QB, Fordham – He is strictly a project quarterback at the moment but he has a huge arm and is surrounded by weapons. He has to wait two or three years but if he can be molded into the next Joe Flacco, then he is well worth the wait.

6th ROUND

175.
Carolina Panthers – Greg Hardy, DE, Ole Miss – The funny thing is is that Hardy was projected to go in the first or second round until he got hurt. Then his injury, weight issues, work ethic, AND character issues plummeted his stock.

181. Chicago Bears – Dan LeFevour, QB, Central Michigan – There have been a lot of questions about whether he is system QB or if he really is a special talent. I think that he could be really good one day but they need to work on his delivery and his reads. It doesn’t help that the Bears have Jay Cutler.

185. Seattle Seahawks – Anthony McCoy, TE, USC – Again character issues and work ethic concerns are why he dropped. He is a pretty good talent but he is lazy. Maybe Pete Carroll can finally get through to him now.

188. Pittsburgh Steelers – Jonathan Dwyer, RB, Georgia Tech - Many were projecting him to go to the Chargers in the first round had they not traded up for Matthews. Obviously there was no chance of that (as I predicted).

191. Cincinnati Bengals- Dezmon Briscoe, WR, Kansas – He is a nice talent but then again issues. He is big and has decent hands, but needs a lot of work. More weapons for Carson, who should be a happy man.

197. Houston Texans – Trindon Holliday, RB/WR/KR, LSU – This dude is the definition speed. He will most likely return kicks exclusively at first, but then they will want to incorporate his speed into the offense as much as possible.

207. Tennessee Titans – Myron Rolle, S, Florida State – A once highly sought after high school prospect, he was even ranked a top 5 recruit, he missed a year after accepting a Rhodes scholarship. So he missed a year of football since he was overseas studying at Oxford. He needs work on the field but he is already smarter than the coaching staff. Expect him to be an extremely good safety in the NFL and then becoming a brain surgeon (the reason why he studied abroad).

7th ROUND

226. St. Louis Rams – George Selvie, DE, South Florida – Two or three years ago he would have been a top 10 pick. Then he was opposite of JPP and people realized he wasn’t as athletic or explosive as thought. I don’t care; I think this guy is extremely underappreciated. He could easily be a pro bowler in a couple years. He should start on that Rams DL and should produce decent to big numbers right away. There’s my reach of the draft (on prediction of production).

231. Washington Redskins – Selvish Capers, OL, West Virginia – Again they need to protect McNabb. He obviously won’t start at tackle but he could at guard. One day he could be their right tackle but he showed in the senior bowl that he is slow on the first step and probably best suited for interior OL.
250. New England Patriots – Zac Robinson, QB, Oklahoma State – He is a talented guy but QB may not be where he plays in the NFL. Most likely he will be a DB or slot receiver.

UNDRAFTED

Jevan Snead, QB, Ole Miss – Had he come out last year (if he could have), he might have been a first or second rounder. There were a lot of questions of why he left this year after such a terrible year, but here has been speculation that he might not have even started for the Rebels. He has since signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and says he is happy he left.

LeGarrette Blount, RB, Oregon – He would have been at least a third round pick had he not blown up in the season debut. He is a big down the field runner who signed with the 49ers but then unexpectedly backed out and signed with the Titans. Again, showing that he may have character issues that he still has to deal with.

Donovan Warren, CB, Michigan – a possible first rounder after the season, he went undrafted. Probably due to his extremely slow 40 times but going undrafted is confusing. Anyways, he signed with the stacked Jets secondary and hopes to stay on with them.

Danario Alexander, WR, Missouri – He is a good, but not great talent with injury issues. But he had some huge games at Mizzou and even outshined former teammate Jeremy Macklin who went in the first round last year.

Ciron Black, OT, LSU – He is projected to be a RT in the NFL but we may never know. For some reason he has not signed on with a team since being undrafted. He was a four year starter at LSU and for some odd reason was not taken.
