Late Week 3 Power Rankings

Sorry for the late week 3 power rankings for college football and the NFL. They are up now. Week 4 will be up probably Tuesday.

NFL Power Rankings Week 3

It’s Week 2 of the NFL season, so that means fans start to panic and overreact to their team’s record: Cowboys, 49ers and Vikes fans.

For some fans, they should throw in the towel on their season already; I'm looking at you Lions, Browns, Bills and Rams fans.

Others, don’t give your team too much credit; Chiefs, Bears, and Bucs fans.

1. New Orleans Saints – Record (2–0)

They haven’t won easy either week. They narrowly escaped the Vikings, and they won at the last second versus the 49ers. They have been without safety Darren Sharper, will be without running back Reggie Bush for some time now and the offense hasn’t been as explosive as normal. The defense continues to get tons of turnovers and now can stop teams’ offenses. Once the offense starts to be explosive again, this team could be unstoppable.

2. Green Bay Packers – Record (2–0)

As expected, the Packers blew out the Bills, 34-7. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers had three touchdowns (two pass, one rush), but didn’t have a great passing yardage day. The rushing attack was less than impressing. There is talk that the Packers might trade former no. 5 overall pick linebacker A.J. Hawk for RB Marshawn Lynch of the Bills. That might not happen. RB Brandon Jackson continues to bust, so maybe another waiver wire guy will step up like RB Ryan Grant did a few years ago. The defense looks dominant still, but just wait for when cornerback Al Harris returns. They could shut down any team.

3. Indianapolis Colts – Record (1–1)

I know, I know. The Texans beat the Colts. So why do I have the Texans behind the Colts? Well, because they are the Colts. It also helps that Indianapolis was far more impressive in their win over the New York Giants, than the Texans over the Redskins. It helps that Peyton Manning continues to look like the best QB in the game. If Manning keeps up this pace, he could possibly break several records.

4. Houston Texans – Record (2–0)

They destroyed the Colts, but nearly lost to the Redskins? They are an offensive juggernaut but still almost lost? It took them overtime to win. QB Matt Schaub didn’t have a huge game Week 1, but he threw for 497 yards and three TD’s against Washington. That is huge. As I said in last week’s power rankings, Arian Foster couldn’t keep it up; he had 19 carries for 69 yards and no TD’s. So was I right, or was I right? Come on, you can tell me.

5. Pittsburgh Steelers – Record (2–0)

I have no clue who is going to be their QB the next two weeks, but this I do know: their defense is back to being the most dominant in the NFL. Troy Polamalu, James Harrison, Lamar Woodley and crew held the great Titans rushing attack to 46 yards. And only 34 of those yards were from Chris Johnson. The million dollar hair (Polamalu) and the rest of their defense can carry them until Ben Roethlisberger returns from suspension.

6. Atlanta Falcons – Record (1–1)

They lost in OT to Pittsburgh in Week 1. They bounced back by completely destroying the Arizona Cardinals, 41-7. Their rushing offense bounced back with Jason Snelling in for the injured Michael Turner, but their rush defense could use some help too. QB Matt Ryan didn’t have big yards day in the air, but he did have three passing TD’s. I’ll take those any day, and three times on Sunday.

7. New York Jets – Record (1–1)

They made the “Great Tom Brady,” look like the scared “Mark Sanchize” of Week 1. In the second half, the second year QB outplayed the three time Super Bowl champ. Let me say that again, MARK SANCHEZ OUTPLAYED TOM BRADY. The defense shut down the Patriots lethal aerial attack without Darrelle Revis. I don’t know if they can keep that up without the best corner in the game, but I know head coach Rex Ryan will sure try.

8. Cincinnati Bengals – Record (1–1)

I have no clue how to rank this team. They were so bad against the Patriots last week, but they shut down the supposed Ravens offense. The defense looked good, but the offense had to kick five field goals to win. Sorry but you can’t win on a consistent basis if you can’t get into the end zone.

9. Baltimore Ravens – Record (1–1)

I wanted to rank them slightly higher, say in front of the Jets, but the Jets beat the Pats who beat the Bengals, who beat the Ravens. Get that? Like J.A. Adande said, that’s BCS (college) logic for you. I am pretty sure they will be ranked higher soon, but for now, they are stuck here at no. 9.

10. Miami Dolphins – Record (2–0)

They beat the Bills in mediocre fashion, but follow that up by beating the media-loved Minnesota Vikings. The Dolphins forced four turnovers from the Vikings. The defense is being compared to the 1972 “No Name Defense” of the Miami Dolphins when they went undefeated. They are mighty good, now the offense needs to get on par with the defense. The RB’s fumbled the ball twice inside the 10 yard line, right after the defense had forced a turnover. Note to QB Chad Henne: get better, throwing for only 114 yards and one TD won’t make your fans, coaches or management happy.

11. New England Patriots – Record (1–1)

They had a dominant performance against the Bengals last week then come up with a clunker against the Jets. Brady looked pathetic against a depleted Jets defense. Head coach Bill Belichick better come up with a solution and fast for his young defense.

12. Tennessee Titans – Record (1–1)

Did you hear that big thud? If you watch the tape of the Steelers versus the Titans you can hear it quite clearly. That was the sound of Chris Johnson’s impossible quest for 2,500 rushing yards hitting a “Steel Curtain.” He had a decent game last week with 142 yards, but followed it up with 34 this week. To get to 2,500 rushing yards, Johnson would have to rush for at least 166 yards a week. Fat chance. I have a better chance of making the Titans roster. Another thing to note, Vince Young was pulled after a poor performance. With such a noted fragile psyche as his, how will it affect him?

13. San Diego Chargers – Record (1–1)

After an upset versus Kansas City a week ago, the Chargers took out their frustration on the Jaguars. Does 38-13 sound look a good remedy to a bitter opener on Monday Night Football? The Bolt’s defense forced six turnovers. Six! Four interceptions and two fumbles. David Garrard got benched after throwing all of those picks. On a sour note, RB Ryan Mathews injured his ankle. Backup fullback Mike Tolbert was handed the keys to the run game, where he had 16 carries for 82 yards and two TD’s.

14. Kansas City Chiefs – Record (2–0)

As a fan, I want them to be for real. As an analyst/ journalist, I can’t see them going better than 8-8 or 9-7 at the best. The defense looks improved, but the offense could be in trouble. And when I say offense, I mean QB Matt Cassel. He wasn’t very accurate, a middling average and he threw two picks. The running game was impressive, but if Todd Haley and the Chiefs want to be in the playoff hunt, the passing game has got to improve.

15. Chicago Bears – Record (2–0)

Dating back to Week 15 of last season, Jay Cutler is 86-135 (63.7 percent) for 1,198 yards, 13 TD’s and 2 int’s in four Chicago wins. Those are very good numbers. I have been downing them all offseason, but you can’t argue with those numbers. I still think the line is weak and will give way, they don’t have great weapons and the defense is old. They could prove me wrong, but I doubt they will be ranked this high for very much longer.

16. New York Giants – Record (1–1)

They looked improved last week, but this week is a whole different story. The line couldn’t stop the Colts pass rush, they couldn’t run the ball effectively and the defense could stop the Colts pass offense or rushing offense. In other words, they were thoroughly beaten. The “Manning Bowl” wasn’t all it was hyped up to be. It was more like the “Peyton and Crew Show.”

17. Philadelphia Eagles – Record (1–1)

I'm already tired of this controversy of Michael Vick. You don’t trade Donovan McNabb to start a QB that is just now shaking off the rust from jail. I hope all the best for Vick, but this is Kevin Kolb’s team when he is fully recovered from a concussion. Andy Reid just needs to stop subbing Vick in so much, and need to let Kolb get in a rhythm. And that performance by Vick this week? It was against the Lions. Not much to base a decision off of. Sure Vick is better now, but the future is more important for the Eagles. Kolb is the future, so start him.

18. Minnesota Vikings – Record (0–2)

I am enjoying seeing the disaster also known as the Vikings. Brett Favre looks old, injured and is not confident with his receivers. Sidney Rice will be out for a few more weeks, Percy Harvin is always dealing with migraines and Bernard Berrian looks like a shell of his former self. The good news? The Vikings might be getting Vincent Jackson.

19. San Francisco 49ers – Record (0–2)

I could have moved them down for being 0-2 but I was encouraged by their game against the Saints. After a rough first quarter for Alex Smith, he actually outplayed Drew Brees in some respects. Their defense was excellent against the Saints. I am seeing big things for this Niners team still.

20. Dallas Cowboys – Record (0–2)

This is quite possibly the most confusing team. They possibly have the most talent of any team in the league, but they are 0-2. No one has played real well: the coaching has been atrocious, the QB play hasn’t been amazing, the running backs haven’t been utilized effectively, the receivers haven’t been great, the line has been injured and again the defense hasn’t played to their abilities.

21. Oakland Raiders – Record (1–1)

Offseason acquisition QB Jason Campbell has been a huge disappointment for everyone. In fact, Bruce Gradkowski was subbed in against the Rams. The won, but maybe they aren’t on their way up, as I had previously thought.

22. Washington Redskins – Record (1–1)

They lost a big lead and ended up losing the game in OT. They keep making me look good. They won ugly against the Cowboys and then they lost in pathetic fashion to the Texans. The offense wasn’t great, as I had predicted, and the defense gave up nearly 500 yards in the air. Hate to tell you I told you so, but I told you so.

23. Arizona Cardinals – Record (1–1)

Derek Anderson performed like Derek Anderson. He too was yanked from the game. Undrafted rookie QB Max Hall took over, but he didn’t perform great either. Unfortunately Anderson will likely start again this week, so maybe ead coach Ken Whisenhunt didn’t make the best decision in letting Matt Leinart go.

24. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Record (2–0)

They beat another lowly team, but I can’t discount a 2-0 start. I’m not giving them too much credit for the time being, but like I have said, the future looks bright. QB Josh Freeman has already developed a lethal connection with rookie WR Mike Williams, now the rest of the team needs to develop.

25. Denver Broncos – Record (1–1)

They looked impressive against he Seahawks, but then again, that was the Seahawks. The QB Kyle Orton to rookie WR Demaryius Thomas connection looks good after Thomas missed the opener with injury. Other than that? A boring team.

26. Jacksonville Jaguars – Record (1–1)

QB David Garrard threw four picks, Maurice Jones drew was pathetic and fumbled twice, and they were man handled by the Chargers. Then to add insult to injury, well injury to injury, backup QB Luke McCown tore his ACL and will be out the rest of the season. Like I said in previous power rankings and in my draft analysis; this is a sad and pathetic franchise with their only hope for relevance being moved to Los Angeles.

27. Seattle Seahawks – Record (1–1)

They lost to the Broncos in a semi-blowout, 31-14. Seattle only had the ball for approximately a third of the game. That’s just not going to get it done. The defense needs to step up and cause some turnovers. Unless you’re the Colts (see last year’s game against the Dolphins), you can’t win a game without the ball.

28. Carolina Panthers – Record (0–2)

And officially, the Jimmy Clausen Era begins. QB Matt Moore failed in dramatic fashion, giving head coach John Fox no choice but to go with the talented rookie. They are the youngest team in the NFL, but they have some growing up to do if they want to win.

29. Detroit Lions – Record (0–2)

QB Matthew Stafford will be out for an extended period of time. That doesn’t give the Lions much hope. Stafford claims he isn’t injury prone, but that label will start creeping up around him. Oh and by the way, rookie RB Jahvid Best is kind of fast. He led the team in rushing yards and receiving yards. He is what you call an offensive weapon.

30. Cleveland Browns – Record (0–2)

I’d like to thank Mike Holmgren for putting such a dreadful team out on the field. The Browns are ridiculously pathetic. They had Seneca Wallace starting at QB. You catch my drift? It doesn’t help that their running backs have fumblitist.

31. Buffalo Bills – Record (0–2)

They got destroyed by the Packers, leading head coach Chan Gailey to start Ryan Fitzpatrick at QB. That is a scary proposition. There is some good news for Buffalo though; CJ Spiller supposedly will be getting more touches. So when is the draft again?

32. St. Louis Rams – Record (0–2)

No one looks good on this team. Steven Jackson had only 19 carries for 75 yards; thanks pathetic line. Sam Bradford only threw 25 passes this week though. That is some good news. He should only throw that much every week. Too bad they took Bradford last year, now who are they going to take no. 1 in the draft this year?

College Power Rankings Week 3

Some big time movement this week in the college rankings. Some big upsets, some so-so games and the typical blow outs. Now let’s talk about this week. The biggest game of the week? (1) Alabama versus (9) Arkansas. Rest of the week is mainly garbage games, expect for two other games between ranked teams.

1. Alabama (3–0) Up Next – (9) Arkansas (3–0)

As expected, Alabama destroyed Duke. There was a huge surprise though, Mark Ingram had nine carries for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Backup Trent Richardson was great too with seven carries for 61 yards and a TD. Quarterback Greg McElroy had possibly his best game of the year too. I didn’t even mention the defense. Expect the Crimson Tide to steam roll the Razorbacks.

2. Ohio State (3–0) Up Next – Eastern Michigan (0–3)

The Buckeyes have only played one good team and that was (19) Miami (Fl.). This week? Eastern Michigan. Ohio State does have a very talented team, but this might be the easiest schedule so far out of any team in the nation. This game will probably be over in the first quarter.

3. Boise State (2–0) Up Next – (23) Oregon State (1–1)

Two weeks ago Wyoming lost to Texas 34-7 and then they had Boise State the next week. They thought that was a stomping? How about a 51-6 blowout by the Broncos? Boise State did that after a week off. This week they have Oregon State. Their last really good team left on their schedule. If they want to be in consideration for the national title, they will need to have a great game against the Beavers.

4. TCU (3–0) Up Next – SMU (2–0)

I thought Robert Griffin III and the Baylor Bears would give the TCU Horned Frogs a little bit more of a challenge but they surprised me again. It was 21-3 in the first quarter and wasn’t even close rest of the way. With a final score of 45-10, the Horned Frogs will continue to roll right through the rest of their easy schedule. They won’t be getting a challenge until (17) Utah on November 6.

5. Oregon (3–0) Up Next – Arizona State (2–1)

The Ducks might have the most dominant offense in the nation. Their first three games they have scored 72, 48 and 69. That’s an average of 63 points per game or more than a point a minute! And to top that? They have only allowed 13 points the entire season, and all of those were in their second game to Tennessee. Sure their schedule has been slightly on the powder puff level, but they are dominating games. They score the most in the nation and allow the fewest points. That is extremely hard to do. The schedule gets tougher now, but I can’t see them losing in the near future.

6. Nebraska (3–0) Up Next – South Dakota State (0–2)

When you make Jake Locker look like a chump, you’re pretty good. The Cornhuskers defense held the possible no. 1 overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft, Locker, to 4 for 20 passes and only 71 yards for a TD and two interceptions. That is pretty good. They did give up 21 points though. On the flip side, the Cornhuskers had three players rush for over 100 yards each. That is what you call, a dominating rushing attack.

7. Texas (3–0) Up Next – UCLA (1–2)

QB Garrett Gilbert had another disappointing game. He had a completion percentage of only 58 percent. Then on top of that, he had three picks. He is only a sophomore, but he will need to grow up quickly if the Longhorns want to be in the talk for a BCS game.

8. Oklahoma (3–0) Up Next – Cincinnati (1–2)

For the first time in a long time, head coach Bob Stoops has been able to keep his team in it when they play a team like Air Force. It seems like every year that the Sooners lose to a team like the Falcons, dashing their national championship aspirations. They barely held on to the win, 27-24. The problem is the Bearcats this weekend. They may not be a great team, but they might catch the Sooners looking ahead to the Red River Rivalry game. Not going to lie, I’ll be rooting for Cincinnati.

9. Arkansas (3–0) Up Next – (1) Alabama (3–0)

QB Ryan Mallett might be in the Heisman conversation now. The Razorback QB has a huge arm, a giant stature (he is 6’7”) and a great leader. Mallett already has over 1,000 yards in the air. I thought he would have roughly 300 yards this past week against the Georgia Bulldogs, he ended up with 380. Hopefully Arkansas’ no. 5 overall defense will be able to handle the Crimson Tide rushing attack. This is by far, the game of the week.

10. Florida (3–0) Up Next – Kentucky (3–0)

College football rankings are like a beauty pageant. Whoever plays the “prettiest” goes up in the rankings. Florida…. Well they haven’t done that. QB John Brantley has played poorly as Tim Tebow’s replacement, yes it’s only three games but the pageant thing, and he needs to pick up his game. They lost a lot of talent in the draft this past year but they should have some special recruits. The biggest story on the football program? The 24 arrests in five years under head coach Urban Meyer. I’d expect some big NCAA investigations into the program soon.

11. Wisconsin (3–0) Up Next – Austin Peay(2–1)

The Badgers squeaked out a win in Tempe, 20-19. Wisconsin blocked the Sun Devils field goal for their point after touchdown to essentially end the game with 4:02 left. RB John Clay had 22 carries for 123 yards and a touchdown, while QB Scott Tolzien had arguably his best game with 19 completions out of 25 attempts for 246 yards and TD.

12. LSU (3–0) Up Next – (21) West Virginia (3–0)

The Tigers beat lowly Mississippi State 29-7. Not the toughest of games, yet the Tigers had to kick five FG’s. Other than that, nothing much to say about that game. This weekend, the Mountaineers will lose to the Tigers. An SEC team versus a Big East team equals a big blow out for LSU.

13. Stanford (3–0) Up Next – Notre Dame (1–2)

A time honored rivalry… that will be a huge one sided victory for Stanford. Notre Dame has lost two straight games, but I still don’t think they are very good. The Cardinal on the other hand, Andrew Luck threw for four TD’s against Wake Forest. Expect a big game from the Stanford QB.

14. Arizona (3–0) Up Next – California (2–1)

A surprising upset, for the Arizona Wildcats over the Iowa Hawkeyes. The result? A big jump in the standings for Arizona. Nick Foles is the real deal. He threw for over 300 yards against a very good Hawkeyes defense. This week, Arizona faces Cal. Hopefully there won’t be a hangover effect from the big victory.

15. Iowa (2–1) Up Next – Ball State(1–2)

They got upset and fell for it. The biggest question for the Hawkeyes is, do they take out their frustration out on Ball State or do they sulk and lose again?

16. Auburn (3–0) Up Next – Southern Carolina (3–0)

I'm not a fan of either team in this game. I don’t believe Gene Chizik is a very good coach, and will be the reason the Auburn Tigers eventually lose. Cameron Newton seems like a special dual threat talent, but is he enough to keep the Tigers from faltering?

17. Utah (3–0) Up Next – San Jose State (1–2)

They won’t jump in the rankings unless there are some big upsets in the next few weeks. They have a very weak schedule and it continues this week against San Jose State.

18. South Carolina(3–0) Up Next – (16) Auburn (3–0)

The only reason why they are rated this high is because they are in the SEC and their coach is Steve Spurrier. Besides that? They have a good defense. They haven’t beaten anyone very impressive. Sorry but the Ole’ Ball Coach will find a way to screw up the season again.

19. Miami (Fl.) (1–1) Up Next – Pittsburgh (1–1)

The Miami (Fl.) Hurricanes were off last week. Maybe with some time to reflect on their loss to the Buckeyes two weeks ago, they can blowout the disappointing Pitt Panthers. Then again, Pitt is a good team too and could be ranked next week if they beat Miami (Fl.).

20. USC (3–0) Up Next – Washington State(1–2)

USC QB Matt Barkley continues to disappoint me. The Trojans are 3-0 but they haven’t beaten anyone in impressive fashion. Like I said before, the rankings are a beauty pageant, and they definitely look like the ugly duckling right now.

21. West Virginia (3–0) Up Next – (12) LSU (3–0)

RB Noel Devine and QB Geno Smith put on a show. Devine didn’t have any touchdowns but he almost had 150 yards on the ground, while Smith had four passing TD’s. If the Mountaineers have any hope of beating LSU, Devine and Smith will have to have the game of their lives.

22. Penn State (2–1) Up Next – Temple (3–0)

The Nittany Lions bounced back from a big lose to Alabama with a 24-0 victory over Kent State. They might have jumped up the rankings, but they should have beaten Kent State by at least 30. Sorry Joe Pa, you didn’t win very “pretty.”

23. Oregon State (1–1) Up Next – Boise State (2–0)

The Beavers beat the Louisville Cardinals to bounce back to .500. This week they face the third best team in the nation. A buddy of mine says that this will be a stiff test for the Broncos. Not likely.

24. Virginia Tech (1–2)Up Next – Boston College (2–0)

It might just be that I'm stubborn, but I still believe the Hokies are one of the best teams in the nation. They bounced back after their hangover loss to James Madison to defeat East Carolina. RB Ryan Williams continues to be a disappointment this season; thankfully Darren Evans and David Williams have picked up the slack.

25. Michigan (3–0) Up Next – Bowling Green (1–2)

I mentioned in my blog how overrated I believe this team is. And they proved me right against Massachusetts. The Minutemen scored 20 in the fourth quarter. Denard Robinson had another big game (241 passing yards and two TD’s; 104 rushing yards and a TD), but was it really a big game? It was against a pathetic team. The media will hype this team to no end. When they finally face a good team and get blown out, they will all be wondering what happened. I will tell you the problem now. They aren’t very good, period. They have faced below average competition. Notre Dame has the 76th worst defense in the nation, UCONN is 55th, UMass isn’t even ranked due to their low poor division status, and this week’s game Bowling Green is 94th. Are you finally getting the point?

16 September 2010

NFL Power Rankings week 2

It was a very long offseason for American football. There was free agency, the draft, training camp and the preseason. All of it was a big tease. Then there was the opening game of the year.

The Minnesota Vikings lost to the New Orleans Saints to end their season, and then they promptly began their season the same way last Thursday.

How did the rest of the National Football League fair during the opening week?

1. New Orleans Saints – Record (1–0)

The reigning Super Bowl championship didn’t look overly impressive against Minnesota in a rematch of the NFC championship game, but as my buddy DJ says, a win, is a win, is a win. Sure it sounds ridiculous but he is right. If you win, you’re good. If you don’t? You drop on the list.

2. New England Patriots – Record (1–0)

Tom Brady didn’t throw for the most yards this weekend, but he made the Bengals defense look like Swiss cheese with three touchdowns. The 38-24 score doesn’t really show how big of a blow-out this game really was.

3. Indianapolis Colts – Record (0–1)

If they weren’t the Colts I probably would have dropped them further. Then again they are the Colts and they lost to a very good Houston Texans team. The Colts couldn’t stop Arian Foster but don’t expect Foster to be a top five running back this season even after the big game. And another big hit for Bob Sanders, he could be out for the season, AGAIN.

4. Green Bay Packers – Record (1–0)

Aaron Rodgers did a very un-Aaron Rodgers type thing against the Eagles, he threw two picks. While he looked dominant in the preseason, he didn’t look the greatest against a young Eagles defense. Ryan Grant could be out for a few weeks, so Brandon Jackson might get the chance to prove he isn’t a bust after all.

5. Baltimore Ravens – Record (1–0)

The defense was even more dominant than the Jets, and they don’t even have their best corners back from injury yet. You ask how can that be? They only gave up six first downs. The offense looked nice, not up to what I expected, but it was the first game of the year and it was against the Jets.

6. Dallas Cowboys – Record (0–1)

What can I say? They looked terrible. In a game of blunders, backup right tackle Alex Barron was called for three false starts and on the biggest play of the game was called for holding. And people were wondering why the St. Louis Rams wanted to get rid of him so bad, when their line sucks.

7. Tennessee Titans – Record (1–0)

Running back Chris Johnson started off slow but had his fourth career 75+ yard run. And solidifying his position as the best RB in the league. What might even be more impressive? Vince Young. He didn’t have a career day or anything, but he was very efficient and even had a 56 yard bomb go for a TD to wide receiver Nate Washington.

8. New York Jets – Record (0–1)

The Jets defense was really good, allowing only 10 points, but the offense, as said before, only got six first downs. Yes it was against the Ravens, but if they want to get to the Super Bowl they are going to have to play better on offense. They will also need to cut back on the penalties: 176 yards of offense, 125 yards in penalties.

9. Atlanta Falcons – Record (0–1)

They lost to a depleted offensive team in the Steelers, and were forced to go to overtime for the third consecutive against Pittsburgh. Michael Turner looked pathetic against the Steelers. For the Falcons sake, hopefully he can perform up to his talent.

10. Houston Texans – Record (1–0)

Arian Foster looked dominant but I'm not convinced he can keep it up over a full season. Matt Schaub didn’t throw a lot, but then again with Foster averaging seven yards a carry, Schaub didn’t have to. The defense looked good, well actually the rush defense looked ok. The pass defense was downright terrible, allowing Peyton Manning to throw for 433 yards. So much for Kareem Jackson being a good pick.

11. Miami Dolphins – Record (1–0)

They almost lost to the Bills. The Bills. For a now-former Bill Parcells team that’s embarrassing. Again it was a case of neither team looking good, but the Bills shouldn’t look good anyways. The ‘Phins offense surprised me with such a pathetic performance, particularly QB Chad Henne.

12. Cincinnati Bengals – Record (0–1)

Forget how they finished, they were blown out 24-3 at the half. Incredible for a team that everyone had them possible Super Bowl hyped. They finished better but they should not be proud after that pathetic display in the first half.

13. Minnesota Vikings – Record (0–1)

I loved seeing the Vikes fail personally. Adrian Peterson looked good but how can the “best running back in the league” be tired in the first half of the first game? Pitiful. Then Brett Favre looked old, slow and still injured. Super Bowl contender? Please. They won’t even win the division.

14. New York Giants – Record (1–0)

Talk about not winning easy. The score was 31 -18 but could have been like 38-10. Penalties, bad plays, and receivers not catching the ball. It was ugly win for the Giants. The Giants could just have easily lost if they didn’t pick off the Panthers three times in the red zone.

15. Pittsburgh Steelers – Record (1–0)

They were forced into OT again against the Falcons, and Rashard Mendenhall bailed them out. His numbers weren’t impressive until that 50 yard TD run in OT, but I think big things are in his future… if the line can get healthy. Good to see S Troy Polamalu is healthy and dominant again. With Polamalu, the defense looked like their typical dominant self.

16. San Diego Chargers – Record (0–1)

They could never really get anything going against the much improved Chiefs. QB Phillip Rivers was getting on his line, his receivers looked only so-so, but at least the defense looked good. They will need to improve their special teams while they’re at it. GM A.J. Smith should also look into signing his two holdouts, LT Marcus McNeil and WR Vincent Jackson.

17. San Francisco 49ers – Record (0–1)

I don’t have much to say. They were terrible. I don’t know if it’s just because their line is young or what, but they couldn’t run. Will Alex Smith ever be good? I’ve been incredibly patient with him, but now I'm getting feed up with his lack of development and production.

18. Kansas City Chiefs – Record (1–0)

I'm drinking the Kool-Aid. They look more explosive on offense and special teams. Their defense looked very much improved too. It is early but head coach Todd Haley, offensive coordinator Charlie Weiss and defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel might just have this team on the short track to success. They might not be a playoff team yet, but an 8-8 record isn’t inconceivable.

19. Philadelphia Eagles – Record (0–1)

Starting QB Kevin Kolb just couldn’t get anything going before going down with a concussion. It probably had to do with Andy Reid switching him and Michael Vick out excessively. They made it interesting there at the end but the game was just a little too out of reach for the Eagles. Vick looked good overall but he hindered Kolb.

20. Arizona Cardinals – Record (1–0)

Talk about ugly win. Is this going to be the biggest win to lose differential from last year? They lost three of their best players: QB Kurt Warner, LB Karlos Dansby and S Antrel Rolle; apparently with those three gone, they went from a playoff and possible Super Bowl contender to a top 10 pick in the draft team.

21. Washington Redskins – Record (1–0)

Embarrassing way to win. As expected, the defense looked really good and the offense looked really bad. Donovan McNabb just has no line and absolutely no weapons. The Redskins might have to win a lot more games like this one to live up to Skip Bayless’ hype.

22. Carolina Panthers – Record (0–1)

Like I said in my last rankings, when does the Jimmy Clausen era begin? Matt Moore threw three picks which is bad enough, but he threw those three picks in the red zone! And worse yet, they were all in the endzone! Words do not describe the QB play from the Panthers.

23. Oakland Raiders – Record (0–1)

Darren McFadden had a nice game, finally (18 carries for 95 yards and a TD; six catches for 55 yards). But that was the lone bright spot of the Raiders. There is talent but they still have a long way to go.

24. Chicago Bears – Record (1–0)

Ok, my final “ugly” win. I'm actually counting it as a loss. It was the Redskins vs. Cowboys game, just at an earlier time. One good thing? Jay cutler didn’t throw a million picks. Sure it was against the Detroit secondary, but he still had a nice day.

25. Jacksonville Jaguars – Record (1–0)

It’s sad when the most exciting thing for Jacksonville is that the visiting Tim Tebow is back. That and the blackout of the game are depressing for the franchise. When can we move them to a new city?

26. Denver Broncos – Record (0–1)

Kyle Orton had a decent day, but when you’re on Denver right now? Nothing is really exciting. This game with the Jags might be the game that everyone forgot about.

27. Seattle Seahawks – Record (1–0)

It was a huge surprise when Seattle just dominated the Niners. The ‘Hawks just wouldn’t let San Francisco get into an offensive groove. People say that Pete Carroll was terrible in his first stint in the NFL, but he went 31-33. Not that bad. Now you can make that 32-33.

28. Detroit Lions – Record (0–1)

WR Calvin Johnson scored a game winning TD. Yet due to an absolutely ridiculous rule it was ruled an incompletion. His feet were in-bounds, he DID have control of the ball. The city of Detroit gets screwed again. First the perfect game mishap and now the CJ catch.

29. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Record (1–0)

They didn’t look overly impressive but I think it was a good step forward for a young, inexperienced team. QB Josh Freeman has some intriguing receiving weapons surrounding him, but don’t expect big games… just yet.

30. Cleveland Browns – Record (0–1)

Jake Delhomme was depressing. He should just retire. Forget veteran leadership, he is useless. The whole Browns team was sad. Both sides of the ball looked pathetic against the Buccaneers. The Dog Pound should prepare for another long, long season. Good job Mike Holmgren.

31. Buffalo Bills – Record (0–1)

When your leading rusher had only 19 yards you are officially the worst rushing team in the NFL. They also only had nine first downs. Nine. They are definitely in the running for the worst team in the league. The battle between them and the Rams will be a long sad one.

32. St. Louis Rams – Record (0–1)

When your rookie QB is throwing 55 times in his debut, that’s dumb coaching. First off, Sam “Bustford” shouldn’t even be starting much less throwing that much. Steven Jackson only got 22 carries. He should be getting at least 30. And probably more like 35-40. Embarrassing. The defense couldn’t hold the inaccurate Derek Anderson to a big passing day. He was still inaccurate but he had some big plays.

College Power Rankings Week 2

Alabama is obviously my top team in college football. If there were any doubts, they won the national championship last year, and they play in the SEC. Now let’s get to business.

1. Alabama (2–0) Up Next – Duke (1–1)

‘Bama made Penn State, then no. 18 in the nation, look like a bug on their windshield. The Nittany Lions didn’t even score until the fourth quarter, and that was a field goal. Next up is Duke. Expect a monster score in that one.

2. Ohio State (2–0) Up Next – Ohio (1–1)

So much for an interesting matchup. Terrelle Pryor didn’t have the best day in the air, but he ran all over the Hurricanes defense. The score wasn’t really indicative of the true beat down that the Buckeyes put on the Hurricanes.

3. Boise State (1–0) Up Next – Wyoming (1–1)

Boise State was off last week but now their easy schedule kicks in. I'm sure Wyoming and future opponents would like to have a say in that but I’ll tell them now, “GET OUT OF BOISE STATES’ WAY!”

4. TCU (2–0) Up Next – Baylor (2–0)

Yes it was Tennessee Tech but 62–7? A ridiculously dominant game. The Horned Frogs are just as scary, if not more, than the Boise State Broncos. The Baylor Bears will be a little more of a challenge this week for TCU.

5. Texas (2–0) Up Next – Texas Tech (2–0)

They seem to be getting off to slow starts in games. Luckily they haven’t faced any one too difficult. They will have to get off to a fast start against Tommy Tuberville’s Red Raiders.

6. Oregon (2–0) Up Next – Portland State (1–1)

Oregon beat New Mexico 72-0 in their season opener. What did they do for an encore? Dismantle Tennessee. They destroyed an SEC team 48-13. I feel sorry for Portland State this week.

7. Nebraska (2–0) Up Next – Washington (1–1)

They might have the second best defense behind ‘Bama. I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t let anyone score more than 20 or 25 points in a game this season. Sure that doesn’t sound all that great, but look at the Oregon scores.

8. Florida (2–0) Up Next – Tennessee (1–1)

Oregon beat Tennessee by 35 points. What will Florida do? Probably not that big of a margin of victory but 25 isn’t that bad. It could be more if the Gators could get on a typical Florida roll.

9. Iowa (2–0) Up Next – (21) Arizona(2–0)

Ricky Stanzi wasn’t all that great but the Hawkeyes’ running game was insane. They had as many rushing yards as in-state rivals, Iowa State Cyclones, had total yards. Iowa will get a true test from Nick Foles and the Arizona Wildcats.

10. Oklahoma (2–0) Up Next – Air Force (2–0)

They destroyed Florida State but I'm not going to drink the juice just yet. In the latest ESPN the Magazine, they found out that the Sooners are typically eight spots overrated. In other words, they fall eight spots from where they were ranked at the beginning of the season. So like I said, I won’t go head over heels for them.

11. Wisconsin (2–0) Up Next – Arizona State (2–0)

They weren’t very impressive against San Jose State but the Hurricanes lost. So by default, they jump up a spot. I don’t expect a great outcome for the Badgers against the Sun Devils unless RB John Clay goes off for Wisconsin.

12. Arkansas (2–0) Up Next – Georgia (1–1)

The Razorbacks have a great QB in Ryan Mallett. He threw for 400 yards against LA–Monroe. The Warhawks aren’t the best team obviously but Malllett performed accordingly. The competition is a little better this week, but Mallett should still throw for at least 300 yards against the Bulldogs.

13. USC (2–0) Up Next – Minnesota (1–1)

They haven’t performed the greatest but they have not lost yet. Either way, they aren’t going anywhere since they can’t be in a bowl. With a tough schedule, they could slide in the next couple of weeks. Lane Kiffin better motivate them, and fast.

14. LSU (2–0) Up Next – Mississippi State (1–1)

280 rushing yards is nice, especially when just your rush yards were more than double the opposing team’s total offense. Jordan Jefferson wasn’t good in the air, but when you can just hand off to multiple running backs it doesn’t matter. It helps that they have a dominant defense.

15. Stanford (2–0) Up Next – Wake Forest (2–0)

Andrew Luck threw two TDs and still wasn’t very impressive. Whatever Jim Harbaugh is doing up at Stanford, it is working. They destroyed the putrid UCLA Bruins 35-0. Wake Forest should be more of a challenge this week, but I’ll take the Cardinal by double digits.

16. Auburn (2–0) Up Next – Clemson (2–0)

QB Cameron Newton had another typical game, as dual threat to pass or run. He didn’t do either particularly well against Mississippi State and will have to have an extraordinary game to beat Kyle Parker and the Clemson Tigers. Parker could make the ACC a very interesting conference, especially if he forgoes the rest of his eligibility in football. He was drafted in the first round by the MLB’s Colorado Rockies.

17. Miami (Fl.) (1–1) Up Next – OFF

The Hurricanes next game is September 23rd. They will need the time to lick their wounds from Ohio State. Bad memories of 2003 Fiesta Bowl popped into my head during that game.

18. Utah (2–0) Up Next – New Mexico (0–2)

The Utes always seem to be good, but then again, they don’t have the most difficult schedule in the world. Don’t put them with the nation’s elite just yet.

19. South Carolina(2–0) Up Next – Furman (1–0)

Everyone is on their band wagon. But count me out. They have a nice defense, only allowing 9.5 points per game. But then again, they played a depleted Georgia team and Southern Miss. They have a weak offense as well. When their SEC schedule kicks in, I’ll be the one laughing at the people on the bandwagon.

20. Arizona (2–0) Up Next – (9) Iowa (2–0)

Nick Foles is no slouch in a Pac 10 littered with very good QBs. At 6’5” and 245 lbs. he is a big guy with a big arm. Iowa will need their secondary to stop one of the nation’s top offenses.

21. WVU (2–0) Up Next – Maryland (2–0)

Marshall took them into overtime. That doesn’t provoke a lot of confidence in the Mountaineers for me. Maryland is a different kind of monster. They may have only played “minor league teams,” but they always have some of the most athletic players in all of football. Can the Mountaineers compete with that?

22. Houston (2–0) Up Next – UCLA (0–2)

QB Case Keenum can light up a scoreboard in a hurry. The sad thing? He hasn’t played up to his 2009 and 2008 numbers. Expect a huge game by Keenum and the nation’s highest scoring offense against the lowly Bruins.

23. Penn State (1–1) Up Next – Kent State (1–1)

Joe Paterno’s team lost to ‘Bama in a big way. So expect a big win against Kent State. Joe Pa will get his team back on the straight and narrow. A BCS bowl is still in sight for this young team.

24. Virginia Tech (0–2)Up Next – East Carolina (2–0)

Yes, they lost both of their games. And yes, they lost to James Madison, but I just can’t see them playing that poorly the rest of the way. I think Hokies, head coach Frank Beamer will light a fire under his team and they will dominate games the rest of the way.

25. Michigan (2–0) Up Next – Massachusetts (2–0)

Everyone is on the Wolverines bandwagon. I say it’s because of the name of the school. They are the winningest football program in history, but don’t think this team is on the comeback. Just before the game, many fans were still yelling “Fire Rich Rodriguez!” Hard to believe those feelings will change after an overrated 2-0 start. They have played UCONN and Notre Dame. Big whoop de doo. Notre Dame is not good. let me repeat that for you: NOTRE DAME IS NOT GOOD. They haven’t been your grandpa’s Fighting Irish in a long time. Funny thing, Notre Dame probably would be here on other people’s rankings if they had won. I reluctantly put Michigan here, but no way would I have put the Fighting Irish here if they were victorious. Sure Denard Robinson looks good but he hasn’t faced a good defense, and won’t see one until (9)Iowa on October 16th. Until then? Take everything you hear about Michigan with a lump of salt. Yes, a lump of salt.

Week 1 NFL Powerrankings

New Orleans Saints rejoiced this National Football League season, when they concluded the year with a 31-17 victory over the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV. But that was then, and this is now.

Who now hold the title as the best team in the NFL? Is it the reigning Super Bowl champs? The losers? Or even a surprise team?

Did anyone help themselves through free agency or the draft? Lets break down this issues NFL rankings, 1-32.

1. Indianapolis Colts – Record Prediction (13–3)

Yes they lost to the Saints but I have a single name for you, Peyton Manning, the quarterback only 4-time Most Valuable Player winner in NFL history. They have won 12 games every year since 2003 and don’t look for them to slip.

They added defensive end Jerry Hughes in the draft to increase the pass rush, get wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez back from injury and most importantly, get safety Bob Sanders back from injury too (well for now anyways).

Bottom line, they have a top three offense and a top 10 defense. They are obviously Super Bowl contenders once again.

2. New Orleans Saints – Record Prediction (12–4)

Have they stopped partying in New Orleans? They bring hope to a region that was decimated by Hurricane Katrina.

In football news, they will be good once again. QB Drew Brees leads the potent offense, and defensive coordinator Gregg Williams continues to think of fearsome schemes.

They have a ball-hawking defense but will be without Pro Bowler S Darren Sharper for the first six weeks due to being placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list after offseason microfracture surgery on his knee. Yes last year’s first round pick Malcolm Jenkins has made the switch to S (where he belonged afterall) but don’t downplay Sharper’s influence and leadsership.

3. Dallas Cowboys – Record Prediction (12–4)

Jerry Jones’ wet dream would be to host the Super Bowl in his stadium and then have his team play there. Well he might actually get his fantasy.

This team is loaded. And sure Dallas always seems to be loaded, but this is different. QB Tony Romo has actually won a playoff game now, they have three starting caliber running backs, a Pro Bowl tight end, multiple weapons at WR, and a quality line. And all that is just on offensive.

Their defense has possibly the best pass rusher in all of football with DeMarcus Ware, up and coming shut down corner Mike Jenkins, and a formidable front seven. Their secondary might end up being shakey at the beginning of the season, but will overcome injuries and youth to become a formidable unit.

4. Green Bay Packers – Record Prediction (12 – 4)

You can put Aaron Rodgers up in the elite level of QB’s now. Don’t listen to this talk of he hasn’t done this and he hasn’t done that. Just watch him play. Dude has a cannon for an arm, is accurate and athletic. And yes, he is better than Brett Favre. He took some hits last year but that was before their line shored up. The Packers even drafted future franchise left tackle Bryan Bulaga to help shore up the line.

Rodgers has weapons all around him so expect another huge year from the future MVP.

Their defense was elite all year until cornerback Al Harris injured his knee. And even then, the defense was great until those pesky Cardinals dropped 51 on them in the playoffs. Watch for reigning Defensive Player of the Year CB/S/jack of all trades Charles Woodson to have another monster year.

I love this team and expect them to go very deep into the playoffs.

5. New England Patriots – Record Prediction (11–5)

Look at these numbers, a completion percentage of 65.7, 4,398 yards, 28 touchdowns, and a passer rating of 96.2.

Pretty impressive right? Those are Tom Brady’s 2009 numbers. Yet we were saying all offseason that those weren’t typical Brady numbers. This is laughable because that was actually Brady’s second best statistical season ever. Yes it wasn’t really close to his record breaking 2007 numbers, but that was a pretty darn good year.

The offense will have a great year but the defense will a huge question mark. They will have to deal with youth and inexperience due to injuries to key players. But let’s trust Bill Belichick. He is a great defensive mind and will figure something out to get the most out of his defense.

6. Baltimore Ravens – Record Prediction (11–5)

Funny to think of the Ravens as an offensive first team, but they have surrounded young Joe Flacco with weapons and are primed for a big offensive season.

They added Anquan Boldin through a trade, recently T.J. Hoiushmanzadeh after he was cut, and a few other intriguing pieces. If Flacco has a bad year, it’s his fault.

Their defense has been completely slaughtered due to injuries, and mainly their usually dominate secondary.

Future Hall of Famer S Ed Reed will be pulling a Sharper and be out the first six weeks of the season due to a hip injury. Not only is Reed out but so are the teams top three CB’s are either out or just back from ACL injuries. There is still a lot of talent in the secondary but that secondary concerns me.

7. New York Jets – Record Prediction (11–5)

I had them lower but then just as I finished, they Jets and Darrelle Revis reached an agreement on a 4-year $47 million deal with $32 million guaranteed. So in other words, I bumped them up a few spots.

They still have questions but Revis makes the NFL’s no. 1 defense that much better. Do they have to still blitz the secondary to get a pass rush? Will all those egos work together? And is Mark Sanchez the answer at QB?

They have a lot of talent but I don’t know if all those egos will mesh. They still are contenders nonetheless

8. Atlanta Falcons – Record Prediction (11–5)

The 2009 Falcons didn’t have as good a year as two years ago but they have no one to blame but themselves. Their big four: Matt Ryan, Michael Turner, Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez, all had numbers that were considerably worse than 2008.

Turner and the Falcons defense were their biggest problems. Their “D” couldn’t seem to stop anyone. While Turner was constantly injured due to the extremely heavy workload he took in ’08.

This year, the Falcons expect to be an elite team. Turner should be healthier and Ryan should be over his “sophomore slump,” but then again the main concern is the defense.

If the additions of Dunta Robinson (free agency), Peria Jerry (injury/ draft), Sean Weatherspoon (draft) and others don’t help, then it could just be shoot outs all season for Atlanta.

9. Tennessee Titans – Record Prediction (10–6)

Chris Johnson had a ridiculous year but can he do it again? And can Vince Young actually throw enough to take the pressure of the run game? Will the defense be better this year?

These three questions are typical for most teams but this is especially true for the Titans. Johnson has been talking about rushing for 2,500 yards but that’s a pipe dream. Young has a good arm and great athleticism, but can he be accurate enough to hit his receivers in tight spaces, in stride or put it only where his receivers can get the ball/ that’s debatable.

The defense suffered last year when Albert Haynesworth bolted for the big money in Washington. They also lost mainstay Keith Bullock late in the season and then in free agency to the New York Giants.

They will have to hope that veterans Cortland Finnegan and Michael Griffin can continue to hold down the secondary, while first round draft pick Derrick Morgan will have to produce immediately.

Though they have talent, they will have to beat the Colts to be true contenders.

10. Cincinnati Bengals – Record Prediction (10–6)

This team is very intriguing. They had a very good defense with two bonafide corners, a good front seven and just traded for former first rounder Reggie Nelson.

Then there’s the offense. It’s loaded now with young talent, a good line (though former first round pick LT Andre Smith appears to be eating away his potential and spot in the league away) and potentially great QB.

QB Carson Palmer hasn’t been impressive the last few years but he still has all the tools to be an elite QB even though he already is 31.

But let’s get down to the real business, Chad Ochocino and Terrell Owens. The two aging former superstars are still talented, particularly Ochocino, but they are on the downslide and crazy characters. If the Bengals want to win, these two need to take a chill pill and let the younger receivers be bigger options in the “O.”

11. Minnesota Vikings – Record Prediction (10–6)

Not going to lie, I'm a huge Vikings hater. I can’t stand Favre, Adrian Peterson and Childress. But mainly Favre or AP.

They have a dominant front seven lead by Jared Allen and the Williams boys but everywhere else seems to have a question mark.

Their secondary is full of injuries, so can they cover anyone?

Will Adrian Peterson get over his fumbilitis?

Who will Favre throw to with Percy Harvin always complaining of migraines and Sidney Rice out with hip surgery?

Is the line going to hold up with their age?

Finally most importantly and most unlikely, will Favre be recovered enough from ankle surgery and have another great year as a soon to be 41 year old QB?

12. Miami Dolphins – Record Prediction (9-7)

I just can’t go against a Bill Parcells’ team. Their defense will be good, they will run the ball and be able to throw the ball down the field now.

They made two huge and important moves in the offseason when they signed Karlos Dansby and traded for Brandon Marshall.

My only question is, will they have a consistently healthy running back? Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams aren’t exactly young and they are injury prone.

Can Parcells find a waiver wire guy that can produce if these two guys get hurt?

With weapons on offense surrounding QB Chad Henne now and a talented defense, they could get the final wildcard spot in the playoffs at the minimum.

13. Houston Texans – Record Prediction (9–7)

I wanted to put them higher and give them a better record but they have two major problems and nothing to do with their team. They have to defeat the Colts and the Titans.

QB Matt Schaub threw for the most passing yards last year and has by far the best wide receiver in the league with Andre Johnson to throw to.

The offensive line should be solid and Schaub should have good weapons to throw to, but who is going to step up and run the ball? Steve Slaton can’t hold on to the ball and I just don’t have faith in Arian Foster.

The defense lost Dunta Robinson, but should be used to him being out due to injuries anyways.

“Super” Mario Williams will anchor the defensive line with his fellow talented running mates. DeMeco Ryans and Brian Cushing (well after he returns from suspension) will dominate the middle of the field. The secondary is a wait and see project at the moment, in my opinion.

I'm not happy with the pick of Kareem Jackson instead of say Kyle Wilson to replace Robinson and Bernard Pollard only had one good year and that was last year after he was released by the Chiefs. Time will tell with this unit.

14. New York Giants – Record Prediction (9–7)

This team could rise up the rankings fast. They will be finally healthy and could be deadly.

Eli is only getting better and has weapons all around. The running game is a question mark in my opinion but that won’t be because of their line.

Injuries ravaged their secondary and defensive line, but everyone is fully recovered. Expect the defense of three years ago. And yes, that was the year they won the Super Bowl.

Don’t be surprised if they have a top five defense and offense.

Go Big Blue right?

15. San Diego Chargers – Record Prediction (9–7)

They are full of talent as usual, but are lacking at two crucial positions, a number one receiver and the all important left tackle.

Now I understand that the NFL is a business but this is an uncapped year so pay your guys. The Chargers refuse to pay WR Vincent Jackson and Marcus McNeil.

So you expect me to give them a higher ranking and a better prediction when they don’t have the LT to protect franchise QB Phillip Rivers and his best weapon?

Brandyn Dombrowski was added for depth two years ago but he won’t be able to just step in and replace the Pro Bowler McNeil. If you believe that like a few of my buddies, then you are sadly mistaken.

They traded for Patrick Crayton a few days ago but he’s only a slot receiver. I like Legedu Naane but he hasn’t produced at a high level yet, and Malcolm Floyd is just not a top flight receiver.

Also I have some questions about their defense.

Well this could be the year that the Chargers finally fall back to the pack in the AFC West.

16. San Francisco 49ers – Record Prediction (9–7)

The Niners had a good defense last year that they bolstered in the second round of the draft but they addressed their biggest need in the first round.

With the 11th and the 17th overall picks, the Niners took linemen Anthony Davis and Mike Iupati. They will start at left guard, Iupati, and right tackle, Davis.

With their mean line, they will run the ball down opponent’s throats and give their QB time to throw.

QB Alex Smith finally has the stability that he has never had before and has dangerous weapons. Doubters still don’t believe in him but with the talent and constancy around him, expect a good year from the former top overall pick.

The only slight downfall on defense is the suspect secondary and questionable pass rush. They might not pile up the sacks, but they will stop the run and not give up huge plays in the passing game.

17. Philadelphia Eagles – Record Prediction (8–8)

They made some good moves but then blew others.

They traded away a QB that couldn’t win the big game and inserted a young QB that has seen the system for a few years. I like the Donovan McNabb for Kevin Kolb switch. People aren’t giving Kolb a chance. Well he has a decent line, dangerous weapons and a coach that will nurture him.

Their secondary is questionable so when they traded up in the draft everyone expected them to take S Earl Thomas. So when they took DE Brandon Graham everyone was surprised. I’d rather have Thomas than the overrated Graham.

Anyways, after the questions marks, the Eagles will still be a decent team that will live and die in shoot outs.

18. Pittsburgh Steelers – Record Prediction (8–8)

They are like the Giants. They could be much higher on the list but it’s not certain they will be a playoff contender this year.

Of course everyone knows that QB Ben Roethlisberger is out for the first four games due to suspension. Dennis Dixon could play great for the time being, but what if when Ben gets back and they are 0-4? Will the season be lost? What about 4-0? Will Big Ben start if they are undefeated?

Time will tell. More like that so-so O-Line will tell.

The defense should be back to its dominant self with Troy Polamalu back from injury, but can their corners shut anyone down? Should have addressed that problem instead of drafting three LB’s in the first five rounds last April.

19. Arizona Cardinals – Record Prediction (7–9)

Kurt Warner is gone. That’s all I should have to say the Cards.

They replaced Warner with Matt Leinart first, then Derek Anderson. Ummmm, no. Big QB issues here.

But that’s not the only important player they lost. On defense they lost S Antrel Rolle and LB Karlos Dansby.

Arizona then replaced Rolle with Kerry Rhodes who could be good, but he’s always a roller coaster with a good one year bad the next. They drafted Daryl Washington to replace Dansby but didn’t address the other inside LB.

This team could be dangerous, but on the other hand, I wouldn’t expect much.

20. Washington Redskins – Record Prediction (7–9)

I doubt they even do this good but I like the Redskins defense a lot.

The offense on the other hand is dreadful. McNabb was a good piece but he has no weapons. His best weapons are his two top TE’s and Santana Moss. The two wide outs they drafted in the second round three years ago are complete busts. They have no help in sight.

McNabb could have protection after drafting Trent Williams and trading for dominant but injury prone Jammal Brown, but then he won’t have any help from his old running backs.

Everyone can praise them because of McNabb but Shanahan only wins with Elway. I expect a very long season from the ‘Skins.

21. Kansas City Chiefs – Record Prediction (7–9)

ESPN the Magazine says that the Chiefs could go 9–7 and win the division. Not so fast. They are still one of, if not the youngest teams in the NFL.

Their O-Line is much improved, as are their weapons for third year starter Matt Cassell but the defense is a concern. Well isn’t it always for the Chiefs?

They have used high draft picks on their D-Line but none of them have panned out yet. Their linebacking core is suspect. And their secondary is very young.

Head Coach Todd Haley picked up his ego and agreed to two big time coordinators, Romeo Crennel and Charlie Weiss.

General manager Scott Pioli continued to disappoint fans when he didn’t go after his big need in the draft. He did take talent but this class will be vital to his job security.

They have talent at most positions on the field but youth and inexperience may be too much for them to overcome.

22. Carolina Panthers – Record Prediction (6–10)

The Panthers have some weapons on offense but how long does it take for Jimmy Clausen to overtake Matt Moore as the starting QB?

They have many of the same guys on defense but I just have a gut feeling they will let everyone down.

They could be good but head coach John Fox does not seem to inspire or lead the team well anymore.

They did get a steal with Clausen, but the QB battle might be the most interesting thing about the Panthers this year.

23. Oakland Raiders – Record Prediction (6–10)

Raider Nation got their best QB since Rich Gannon was forced to retire. Jason Campbell should have been a Pro Bowler by now but the Redskins screwed him over.

They have ok weapons and an average O-Line to surround Campbell with, but they will have to get healthy and perform up to their billing.

The defense should be slightly impressive with the drafting of MLB Rolando McClain and holdovers of Richard Seymour and Nnamdi Asomugha.

The ESPN depth chart for them is confusing, but hey, the Raiders are run by a head case.

24. Chicago Bears – Record Prediction (6–10)

The once vaunted Bears defense has lost its luster from age and underperforming. Then this off season they went out and got the prize piece, Julius Peppers.

Three problems with the signing. They paid too much, he doesn’t always play up to his abilities and did I mention they paid too much?

Management brought in Mike Martz to help the incredibly talented Jay Cutler, but they didn’t add any valuable weapons.

Everyone is up on Johnny Knox but Knox, Devin Hester and Devin Aromashodu aren’t good enough weapon to make Martz’s offense effective.

Add that to the Bears below average line, and you can expect a long grueling season in the Windy City.

25. Jacksonville Jaguars – Record Prediction (6–10)

The Jags are in a very tough division and don’t have a good QB. They have a good line, running backs and wide outs, but nothing special at QB to lead them to a much better record than this.

Their defense is very good anymore and they didn’t draft well. With John Henderson and Marcus Stroud replaced by overdraft Tyson Alualu and Terrance Knighton and busts at DE, their front four is pathetic.

So to the Colts, Texans and Titans don’t really have much to worry about when they are pounding the Jags D into the ground.

Besides, does Jacksonville even care about the Jaguars?

26. Denver Broncos – Record Prediction (6–10)

The Broncos started incredibly hot last year at 6-0 but didn’t even make the playoffs after finishing 8-8.

Denver’s defense wore down and the offense went anemic. They had a chance to possibly make the playoffs if they had beaten the lowly Chiefs but crumpled

During the offseason the franchise left tackle, Ryan Clady, tore his patella in a game of pickup basketball.

Then the Broncos went out and traded their best weapon WR Brandon Marshall.

On top of that Pro Bowl OLB Elvis Dumervil tore his pectoral muscle in training camp.

With all their injuries and poor draft (see my 2010 NFL Mock Draft) this looks like a long cold season for the Mile High team.

27. Seattle Seahawks – Record Prediction (5–11)

Only four years ago Seattle was in the Super Bowl. Now they are a bottom six team.

Through poor overall drafting, age and injuries, the Seahawks have gone from the pride of the Northwest to the laughingstock of the league.

They have tried quick fixes with Deion Branch, T.J. Houshmanzadeh and others but that just hasn’t worked out.

After the season, Seattle lured USC head football coach Pete Carroll away from the prestigious school and with him comes hope… but give him three or four years till they start winning like the fierce Seahawks of the past.

28. Detroit Lions – Record Prediction (4–12)

The Lions are still a couple of years away, especially on the O-Line and secondary, but they are definitely on the road to relativity.

Matthew Stafford looks like a good pick but he has to get more experience, which he won’t get if the Lions continue to put that line on the field. They added Nate Burleson Tony Scheffler and Jahvid Best to Stafford arsenal.

Their offense could put up some nice numbers but that line is just so worrisome.

Head coach Jim Schwartz had management go and get Kyle Vanden Bosch and Corey Williams to shore up the D-Line. Then they drafted crazy good DT Ndamakong Suh to further the lines capabilities.

After the D-Line, the defense isn’t very impressive. Full of has-beens and never-weres. Louis Delmas had a nice rookie season but we have seen that before. They will give up tons of passing yards unless that D-Line gets a sack on every play, which is impossible.

29. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Record Prediction (4–12)

Tampa gave QB Josh Freeman weapons when they drafted Arrelious Benn and Mike Williams. Both great talents but questionable characters. I think Freeman will take their talent and day though.

The running game will probably be lacking this season but RB’s are a dime a dozen.

In the draft, the Bucs took DT’s Gerald McCoy and Brian Price with their first two picks, hoping they will dominate on the defensive line for the next 10 years. Behind them the linebacking core is talented but will they put it together.

Will the secondary survive with Aqib Talib out for the first few games after a suspension? While he is out, will the ancient Ronde Barber and promising Tanard Jackson be able to hold down the fort?

They are at least three years away, but they could be exciting now.

30. Cleveland Browns – Record Prediction (3–13)

Everyone thought that the Browns would be on the up and up when Mike Holmgren was hired on. Well I'm not one of those people. I knew they would suck, wouldn’t draft well, and not do well in any other way in the offseason.

You can say they played well the last few weeks of the year but those weren’t very good teams.

They have a few nice pieces, but nothing like the team that went 10-6 three years ago.

Until they win more than seven games, don’t tell me that Mike Holmgren is some magician and football god.

31. Buffalo Bills – Record Prediction (2–14)

CJ Spiller… and that is all. Just kidding but in all reality, it’s true.

They have a few nice pieces on defense and WR Lee Evans but after that? No one.

It’s a sad thing for a franchise that had greats such as Jim Kelley, Thurman Thomas, Andre Reed, James Lofton, Bruce Smith and O.J. Simpson.

In fact, they might even be in east New York in the near future.

32. St. Louis Rams – Record Prediction (1–15)

I debated the Bills here but that’s how little I have faith in Sam “Bustford” and the other busts littering the roster.

The only successful player on their team is Steven Jackson. I feel sorry for the poor guy. I wish for his sake they would trade him to a contender.

And don’t give me that, “the Rams went 3-1 in the preseason so you never know” argument.

The 2008 Detroit Lions went 4-0 in the preseason, and they went 0-16 in the regular season. And last year, the Colts went 1-3 in the preseason, and ended up going to the Super Bowl.

Expect another very long season in the Gateway City.

Week 1 College Football Powerrankings

Alabama is obviously my top team in college football. If there were any doubts, the won the national championship last year, and they play in the SEC. Now let’s get to business.

1. Alabama (1–0) Up Next – (18) Penn State (1–0)

The blew out their week one opponents. That was even without reigning Heisman award winner Mark Ingram. Penn State will be a tougher challenge but that ‘Bama defense will be too fast for Joe Paterno’s Nittany Lions.

2. Ohio State (1–0) Up Next – (11) Miami (Fl.) (1–0)

Marshall was no match for Terrell Pryor and the Buckeyes. Then again the Hurricanes aren’t the Thundering Herd are they?

3. Boise State (1–0) Up Next – OFF

They squeaked out a win against the former seventh best team in the country, Virginia Tech. They have the next week off but could be on their way to a national championship game.

4. Texas (1–0) Up Next – Wyoming (1–0)

Texas didn’t look overly impressive against Rice but I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt for now. Plus I think Colt McCoy’s replacement, Garret Gilbert, will be great sooner rather than later.

5. TCU (1–0) Up Next – Tennessee Tech (0–1)

They took out formerly ranked Oregon State, but it wasn’t an overwhelming win. I believe they will continue to win and get another BCS bowl berth.

6. Florida (1–0) Up Next – South Florida(1–0)

John Brantley didn’t play the greatest but then again he is replacing Tim Tebow. Let’s give the guy a little slack and time to develop.

7. Iowa (1–0) Up Next – Iowa State (1–0)

Ricky Stanzi went down again but ended up returning. If Stanzi goes down again, James Vandenberg should step right in and perform more admirably than he did last year.

8. Nebraska (1–0) Up Next – Idaho (1–0)

They lost Ndamakong Suh to the NFL but cornerback Prince Amukamara is a shutdown corner, and their cornerstone piece of their again dominant defense.

9. Oregon (1–0) Up Next – Tennessee (1–0)

Oregon just absolutely dominated New Mexico. It might be slightly more difficult against Tennessee but I wouldn’t expect anything but a 20+ point win victory for the Ducks.

10. Oklahoma (1–0) Up Next – (17) Florida State (1–0)

The rankings say I should take Oklahoma, but I never have confidence in Bob Stoops. Florida State also has a special player named Christian Ponder. I’ll take Ponder every day and twice on Sundays over Landry Jones. Which in coincidence, Ponder might be playing next year.

11. Miami (Fl.) (1–0) Up Next – (2) Ohio State (1–0)

Jacory Harris Vs. Terrell Pryor. That is going to be a very interesting battle of two dynamic QB’s. Both have great defenses and good coaches. Expect a thriller.

12. Wisconsin (1–0) Up Next – San Jose State (0–1)

RB John Clay is one of the best backs in the nation, and the main cog to the Badgers team. With a spotty QB, Wisconsin will have to run the ball a lot this year.

13. USC (1–0) Up Next – Virginia (1–0)

Sure they won’t have the opportunity to play in a bowl game, but they are still a great team. The postseason ban could hurt recruiting a little but come on, we are talking about USC here.

14. Virginia Tech (0–1) Up Next – James Madison (1–0)

The Hokies looked sloppy at first but then put things together, and ended up losing to Boise State with a little over a minute left. Let’s just say, I feel sorry for James Madison.

15. Arkansas (1–0) Up Next – LA–Monroe (0–0)

QB Ryan Mallett is monster in stature and in throwing ability. The dude has a cannon attached to his right side. Arkansas will be having an aerial assault against LA–Monroe.

16. Georgia Tech (1–0) Up Next – Kansas(0–1)

I'm not a fan of the Yellow Jackets offensive scheme but it works. They can run but throwing the ball isn’t really a new invention. Who knows what would happen if a good team loaded the box.

17. Florida State (1–0) Up Next – (10) Oklahoma (1–0)

Ponder didn’t throw for a ton of yards, but for every 40 yard in the air he had a touchdown. I’ll take that. Expect the Seminoles speed to run circles around the Sooners.

18. Penn State (1–0) Up Next – (1) Alabama (1–0)

Freshman QB Robert Bolden looked good against Youngstown State, but how ill he look against the nation’s top team?

19. LSU (1–0) Up Next – Vanderbilt (0–1)

Still can’t believe LSU is ranked this low but they did barely defeat a ridiculously depleated Tar Heels team.

20. Stanford (1–0) Up Next – UCLA (0–1)

QB Andrew Luck looks like he could be a top three pick in the upcoming draft. He has special tools but will the Cardinal be as good as last year with Toby Gerhart now in the NFL?

21. Georgia (1–0) Up Next – South Carolina(1–0)

They are a sleeper team this year, but Georgia has a lot of talent. A.J. Green is possibly the best wide receiver in the nation and he didn’t even play this weekend when Georgia had a 55-7 victory.

22. Pittsburgh (0–1) Up Next – New Hampshire (1–0)

They lost to the constantly underrated university of Utah, who is unranked, but they should have still won by double digits. Big drop in the standings on this list.

23. UNC (0–1) Up Next – OFF

They lost to LSU and have the next week off. Hopefully they will be getting their nine suspended players back from ridiculous NCAA violations.

24. WVU (1–0) Up Next – Marshall (0–1)

The tandem of QB Geno Smith and RB Noel Devine could be dangerous. Devine is small in stature but giant in performance, could be the fastest player in the nation.

25. Auburn (1–0) Up Next –Mississippi State (1–0)

As an SEC team, Auburn is loaded with talent. QB Cameron Newton is a dual threat (186 passing yards, 3 passing TDs; 171 rushing yard, 2 rushing TDs) but might be the only legit weapon. Not good news for a rise up the SEC ranks.
