It’s lonely at the top. Well that’s what they say right? Well if you’re the Steelers I don’t think you mind the altitude.
Well there was the ESPN obsession over the Vikings and the Cowboys games, and then they talked about helmet–to–helmet hits. I know it’s important, controversial and dangerous, but how can say something needs to be done then show highlights of the big hits? That is what you call hypocritical.
1. Pittsburgh Steelers – Record (4–1)
It wasn’t really a close call between the Steelers and the Jets. Both teams play great defense, both have good records, but the Steelers have an advantage. And that would be called Ben Roethlisberger. The Steelers were winning with backups, now just imagine how good they will be with their two-time winning Super Bowl quarterback? Big Ben did look a little rusty, but he threw three TDs. The biggest asset for the Steelers right now though is running back Rashard Mendenhall. He will be able to take the burden of the offense off of Roethlisberger.
2. New York Jets – Record (5–1)
Another reason why it wasn’t that difficult to choose who is the top team was the jets game against the Broncos this weekend. They only won by four, and even then they relied on a long pass interference call to get them into the five yard line. Yes it was a face mask, so it was pass interference, but it practically won the game for the Jets. On the bright side, LaDainian Tomlinson looks to be back to his old self. Well not old, as in the LT of four years ago.
3. New England Patriots – Record (4–1)
QB Tom Brady was outplayed again, well that was until the fourth quarter and overtime. From there, he dominated. And no it wasn’t a surprise that wide receiver Deion Branch had a big game. It was never about him not having good numbers. It’s that he doesn’t have the lethality of Randy Moss. Moss is the ultimate deep threat, while Branch is just another short WR on a team with four of the same guy. Unless the Patriots have a season like they did in 2007, you will not be able to convince me that it was a great move.
4. Indianapolis Colts – Record (4–2)
QB Peyton Manning is an artist. He carves, molds and pounds secondary’s into submission. He threw for a little over 300 yards against the Redskins, while using his new weapon. Well not exactly new. WR Pierre Garcon is finally back to playing like he did last year. Injuries had held him back, but now he looks fully healthy and back on his way to stardom. By the way, that was a sick one handed catch by Garcon. But did his teammate Aaron Francisco out do him with his one handed interception? Let me know what you think on twitter @19Yanks23
5. New Orleans Saints – Record (4–2)
Attention ladies and gentlemen, the Saints finally put it all together. Their 31–6 victory over the Buccaneers was their most complete game of the season. Brees didn’t put up the numbers I expected him to, but the running game was ridiculous. RB Chris Ivory started with RB Pierre Thomas out with injury. Ivory had 15 carries for 158 yards. He didn’t have a TD but Brees got three TDs so I guess all is well. RB Ladell Betts did have TD but that was a garbage time TD. Ivory was clearly the star of this game.
6. Philadelphia Eagles – Record (4–2)
I like the Eagles more now with Kevin Kolb at the helm. So do we have a QB controversy in Philly? Kolb vs. Michael Vick. The passer vs. the athlete. Personally, I’d take Kolb. In five career starts, he has three 300 yard games. I’ll definitely take that. Now it comes down to one of those stupid press conferences. Well it might have been decided on Sunday when Vick showed up late for the game. Reportedly up to 45 minutes from kickoff. Now I don’t know if that was cleared through head coach Andy Reid, but the whole situation is kind of fishy. One other thing, their defense scares me. And not in the they will dominate way, but the secondary is atrocious and I doubt they go very long without looking like the Texans secondary.
7. Baltimore Ravens – Record (4–2)
They would have been No. 3 on the list if they had of beaten the Patriots. QB Joe Flacco looked great until it came down to fourth quarter and overtime. To add to that, RB Ray Rice didn’t have the big game I was expecting from him. The biggest question for this Ravens team is, will Joe Flacco step it up and play like a top five QB for an entire game?
8. Tennessee Titans – Record (4–2)
RB Chris Johnson got his 100 rushing yards but it didn’t feel right. The game felt like a snoozer. I actually watched Game 3 of the ALCS more than the “Monday Night Football” game. Then come to find out, both starting QB’s were knocked out/ so it came down to the running game and defense. Even thought the Jaguars have Maurice Jones Drew, I'm taking Chris Johnson every time.
9. Atlanta Falcons – Record (4–2)
What happened? They were on a role which lead me to having them No. 3 last week. Then they went to Philadelphia. It was pathetic. The score was 31–17 but it might has well been 50–0. The Falcons just seemed lifeless. RB Michael turner only had 45 yards on 15 carries, Matt Ryan was not accurate and the defense gave up huge plays. On a side note: a friend of mine said that I was wrong in saying that their secondary didn’t look good. He said that because they lead the league in interceptions that I was underplaying them. Well then I laughed at him when the game went final. Final stat line for Eagles QB Kevin Kolb – 23/29 for 326 yards, three TDs, a completion percentage of 79.3, a 34 yard TD strike to WR DeSean Jackson and an 83 yard bomb to WR Jeremy Maclin. I love being right.
10. Houston Texans – Record (4–2)
RB Arian Foster continues to lead the league in rushing, but he continues to lose ground. If he keeps having these 18 carries for 71 yard games like he did against the Chiefs, he won’t be leading for long. The good news for Houston, QB Matt Schaub had a great game. Another bright side, the secondary didn’t allow 300 yards. Then again Chiefs QB Matt Cassel seems like he can’t throw the ball farther than a four year old. Now back to the bad news, the secondary did allow Cassel to throw three TDs.
11. New York Giants – Record (4–2)
They, like the Steelers, were my sleeper picks. Both had the talent to be great teams, but after poor years last year it also wouldn’t surprise me if they pulled a Dallas. They have three major upgrades this year. 1. Their secondary and overall defense looks much improved from last year. 2. WR Hakeem Nicks looks like an elite talent. He doesn’t have otherworldly numbers, but coverage’s are starting to double team him or just shade a safety his way. 3. RB Ahmad Bradshaw looks amazing. I did not expect this from him this year. He was coming off two surgeries on the same leg. Yet, he is the second leading rusher in the NFL.
12. Green Bay Packers – Record (3–3)
I want to put them higher than this. In fact they were a possible Super Bowl pick for me. Then, injuries seemed to take over. Key pieces are seemingly all injured. QB Aaron Rodgers suffered a concussion last week, inside linebacker Nick Barnett is out for the year, tight end JerMichael Finley is out for the year, rookie safety Morgan Burnett is also out for the year, their offensive line has been banged up, and seemingly countless outhers are out. Reinforcements may be on the way though. CB Al Harris and S Atari Bigby will be back soon after they were on the PUP list before the season.
13. Kansas City Chiefs – Record (3–2)
They could have and probably should have dropped more, but everyone that was behind them either already jumped them or lost. So they only fall two spots. The ground game was great, QB was ok, and the defense was good. Well the defense was good until the fourth quarter. Then out of nowhere, the Houston offense woke up, scoring 21 points in the fourth. They should have won though. The pass interference call on CB Brandon Flowers was ridiculous. It was ticky–tack. There actually might have been more contact due to Houston WR Andre Johnson than due to Flowers. That play seemingly sealed the win for Houston.
14. Miami Dolphins – Record (3–2)
I would call their overtime win against the Packers great, but then you take a look at the injury report and you change your mind. It was nice to get a win, but it wasn’t exactly a stellar win. QB Chad Henne still isn’t consistent, the running game should have been better, but thanks to the defense, they pulled through. I want to say this franchise is on the up and up, but hearing that Bill Parcells already packed his bags and left, that doesn’t sound good.
15. Chicago Bears – Record (4–2)
What does QB Jay Cutler have to do to get some protection? Hire an army? Whatever it takes, he needs to do it. Why all the fuss? Cutler has been sacked 15 times in the past two games he has played. He even missed the game last week due to a concussion he suffered from, of course, being sacked. And if anyone forgot, WR/KR/PR Devin Hester is fast and good at returning kicks and puts. Hester now has 13 combined returns for TDs, nine punt returns and four kick returns, tying him with Brian Mitchell for the most in NFL history.
16. Cincinnati Bengals – Record (2–3)
They are coming off a bye yet they still move up. That wasn’t because of them though. In fact, I'm not even confident with them here after looking who they play next week, the Falcons. You would hope they would be improved after coming off a bye, but with the two clowns at receiver, who knows? I'm expecting a loss if the lead jackass, Terrell Owens, doesn’t stop acting like an idiot and just play.
17. Washington Redskins – Record (3–3)
They lost another close one. RB Ryan Torain is finally producing like Mike Shanahan had hoped when he drafted him two years ago. When Shanahan was with the Broncos. That’s dedication. But don’t too much stock in Torain yet. He only has one 100 yard game and that was this week. The Redskins actually had a chance to win, but then QB Donovan McNabb pulled a Brett Favre and blew it by throwing a ridiculous pick.
18. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Record (3–2)
They were blown out by the Saints. And like in a blowout, they looked terrible. They actually scored a TD in their 31-6 loss to the Saints, but because they failed the two-point conversion, it looks like two measly field goals. They might not be a for real team, but as I have been saying, watch out in a couple years.
19. Minnesota Vikings – Record (2–3)
ESPN and every other sports media went crazy over the game between the Vikings and the Cowboys. “Oh no! These two teams should be doing really good so let’s obsess over them.” First off, most NFL fans are sick and tired of Brett Favre. I know ESPN, or as Dan Patrick likes to call them, “The Mothership,” refuses to believe we are starting to hate Favre, but it is true.
One thing interesting about Favre actually has nothing to do with football. It’s his supposed sexting relationship with Jenn Sterger. If you haven’t looked her up, you should, I can’t blame the guy. That is interesting but even more interesting is what will happen between Favre and his wife? Do we have a Tiger Woods Part II happening here? And to wrap up that whole situation, the NFL needs to keep their noses out of it. Personal issues like that doesn’t need an investigation. Obviously the relationship was mutual. So he does not need to be suspended. If they do suspend Favre, how can he be punished, yet Jets WR Braylon Edwards wasn’t for his second DUI? Insane.
20. Seattle Seahawks – Record (3–2)
They keep surprising me. I didn’t expect Pete Carroll to just leave USC and step back into the NFL and win right away. I expected them to be maybe 1–4 at this point. It is a good surprise, but even crazier? How much they have improved off of other teams cast–aways. Former Bills RB Marshawn Lynch and former Lions WR Mike Williams who was actually out of football for at least the past two years. Yet they were both PAC–10 players, Williams went to USC and Lynch went to Cal, and Carroll was the head coach of USC. Doesn’t surprise me as much once I think about it.
21. Arizona Cardinals – Record (3–2)
I don’t know how they are 3–2. They have possibly the worse QB situation in the league, lost three key players and everything else seems to be crumbling. The Cards take on the Seahawks this week, but I will take Seattle in this one. Expect a huge fall for Arizona, because I really don’t think you can build a good team around undrafted rookie QB Max Hall.
22. Jacksonville Jaguars – Record (3–3)
I always seem to say this, but this team is boring and needs to be relocated. I never can get into their games or even news about them. I feel sorry for RB Maurice Jones Drew. Maybe he could have the team moved to Los Angeles, close to UCLA where he went to school. Maybe TE Marcedes Lewis can contribute on a consistent basis and help out MJD more then on occasion. Speaking of helping out, WR Mike Sims–Walker would be a welcome addition. Actually he is there but he just sucks this year.
23. St. Louis Rams – Record (3–3)
How are they doing this? My favorite punching bag is actually winning. It’s not really due to their own play, but they are getting wins. They should have lost to the Redskins earlier this year, no way should they have beaten the Seahawks, and the chargers look worse off than the Cowboys. Crazy question here. Could they actually win the division? Can’t happen could it?
24. Denver Broncos – Record (2–4)
They probably should be 3–3 but that pass interference literally squashed their hopes. Rookie QB Tim Tebow did have his first career TD though. So that’s a bright spot. Starting QB Kyle Orton had looked great this season, then the Jets secondary immediately took care of any notion that Orton was a great passer.
25. Oakland Raiders – Record (2–4)
They lost to the Niners, QB Jason Campbell is a mess, and they couldn’t even run the ball. I have been a fan of Campbell for years and always said it was because of offensive coordinators and other factors why he wasn’t producing up to his abilities. Now he just looks awful. Could the Redskins have ruined him and all his potential? Looks that way unfortunately. Interesting rumor, supposedly their entire team was available for trade before the deadline. They have some interesting pieces that a lot of teams could have used.
26. Dallas Cowboys – Record (1–4)
So who is in more of a mess? The Chargers or the Cowboys? Well the ‘Boys have lost to the Redskins, the Bears, the Titans and the Vikings. All talented and supposed to be good teams. Well the Bears aren’t all that talented in my opinion. The Cowboys also have lost to their own stupidity. Mainly their offensive coordinator and head coach are the worst in the league. But there is hope. They have a top five offense and a top five defense. Also maybe in the offseason, owner Jerry Jones could get Bill Cowher or Jon Gruden to coach. But until the offseason, don’t make in major changes because those never fix anything.
27. San Diego Chargers – Record (2–4)
I initially had them above the Cowboys then I looked at who they have lost to. The Chiefs, Seahawks, Raiders and now Rams. The only team that is viable is the Chiefs and maybe the Seahawks. Other than that? It’s pathetic. The worse thing is who amazing inept their special teams are. Sure they always start slow and end on a ridiculous hot streak, but I don’t think they have the talent to make that happen this year. Then again they do have Philip Rivers at QB.
28. San Francisco 49ers – Record (1–5)
Their GM texted ESPN and said that the 49ers would come back and win the division. Had they started 2–4 it might be believable. But now at 1–5? Incredibly unlikely. In fact, I don’t think any team in NFL history has ever done that. I hope they do for my predictions sake, but I seriously doubt it at this point.
29. Detroit Lions – Record (1–5)
So franchise QB Matthew Stafford goes down with another injury and is seamlessly replaced by Shaun Hill. Now Hill fractured his forearm. Great. Now they have to rely on bust QB Drew Stanton. If this team ever thought of winning more than four or five games, that pretty much all went up in smoke. Unless Stafford returns and plays out of his mind.
30. Carolina Panthers – Record (0–5)
So head coach John Fox made the switch back to QB Matt Moore. Hey John, it’s not the QBs. It’s you and your pathetic team. I thought that Jimmy Clausen was put into a better situation than Sam Bradford when he was drafted later in the draft. That looks like a negative. They need help on defense and on the offensive line. And a couple receiving threats to pair with WR Steve Smith would be nice.
31. Cleveland Browns – Record (1–5)
When there was a rumor that rookie QB Colt McCoy could have been cut I thought everyone was out of their mind. If they had, they would have regretted it. The rookie made his debut start against the Steelers and didn’t look half bad against their great defense. He went 23/33 for 281 yards and a TD. He did have two picks, but he is a young rookie going against possibly the best defense in the league. I wouldn’t mind him on y team.
32. Buffalo Bills – Record (0–5)
This team depresses me. I can’t say anything about this team that you haven’t already heard. They, like the Jags, need to be moved. Their offense is terrible, their defense is pathetic, their special teams are nothing impressive and the coaching is crazy. Can you say, “and with the first overall pick, the Bills are on the clock.”

NFL Power Rankings Week 6

College Power Rankings Week 7
OK so the BCS rankings came out this week. They are… how do I put this lightly? Terrible. Oklahoma is good but the No. 1 team in the nation? Please, no way. Oh, and I was finally able to get Michigan off of this list.
There was a sad injury though that I feel must be touched upon. Rutgers defensive tackle Eric LeGrand was paralyzed from the neck down after a tackle on special teams against Army. There have been players that have been able to battle back and walk, but it is still scary and sad. Hope the best for him.
1. Oregon (6–0) Up Next – UCLA (3–3)
So you mean to tell me that this isn’t the No. 1 team in the nation? You have got to be kidding me. They score 543.3 points a game, best in the nation, and only give up 16.3 points a game, good enough for 16th in the nation. Running Back LeMichael James is still No. 5 in the nation in rushing yards. and that was after a BYE week. ESPN’s Brad Edwards says that the Ducks might be better off at No. 2 in the nation. I say he is a fool. Oklahoma isn’t the choking Ohio State or Oklahoma. They will be fine here and should run their way to a national title game opportunity.
2. Boise State (6–0) Up Next – BYE WEEK
They have another bye week? Are you kidding me? Does anyone want to play them? There was a story about the Broncos about a year ago saying how difficult it is for Boise State’s Athletic Director to get teams to come to Idaho outside of the division. Remember the opening game of the season between Boise State and Virginia Tech (21). The game was at FedEx Field in Landover, MD. It was said to be a home game, but it was virtually a Virginia Tech home game. Anyways, the dominoes have fallen for Boise State, and they just might get a shot at the national championship game.
3. Oklahoma (6–0) Up Next – (20) Missouri (6–0)
How are they No. 1 in the BCS rankings? They only score 36 points a game, 17th in the nation, and give up 19 points a game, 28th in the nation. Those don’t sound bad, but just look up at Oregon again. It also doesn’t help that Oklahoma only beat Utah State by 7, while San Diego State University beat them by 34. Then Oklahoma only beat formerly-ranked Air Force by 3, SDSU beat Air Force by 2. And finally, Oklahoma only beat Cincinnati by 2, while Fresno State beat Cincy by 14. Now I'm not saying Fresno State or SDSU is better, but Oklahoma just isn’t the No. 1 team in the nation.
4. TCU (7–0) Up Next – Air Force (5–2)
TCU now has the best scoring defense in the nation, only allowing 9.3 points per game. To go along with the defense, they have the 7th best scoring offense in the nation at 40.1 points per game per game. They haven’t had the steepest competition, but they could beat any team in the nation on any given day. Yes that is an overused phrase, but TCU is ranked here at No. 4 for a reason. And that would be because they are exceptionally good.
5. Auburn (7–0) Up Next – (7) LSU (7–0)
QB Cam Newton is a beast. He didn’t have a huge day in the air against Arkansas, but he just finds a way to win. After reading my comments about Auburn, I'm always talking about the guy. Newton is big (6–6, 250 lbs.), fast, and extremely talented. He was going to be the heir apparent to Tim Tebow at Florida, but he transferred to Auburn. You think Urban Meyer wishes he could have him back? I guarantee it. Because of Newton, Auburn has the No. 6 scoring offense in the nation. That 24.4 points per game allowed is scary though.
6. Alabama (6–1) Up Next – Tennessee (2–4)
I’d like to have the Crimson Tide higher on the list, but they just did not impress me with their win over Ole Miss. They only beat the rebels by 13. To boost Alabama’s stock, they needed to win by at least 25. Nick Saban needs to do something to light a fire underneath his team. Yes they are 6–1, but they want to go to the title game right? Isn’t that where this team is at? National title or bust?
7. LSU (7–0) Up Next – (5) Auburn (7–0)
They have a crazy coach, a nice running back and a great defense. But can they continue to win with such poor quarterback play? Their backup QB (Jarrett Lee) has almost as many passing yards as the starter (Jordan Jefferson), with eight less attempts (50) than the starter’s completions (58) and the same amount of touchdown passes (2). Lee also has a completion percentage of 72 percent, while Jefferson is completing only 53.2 percent. Maybe head coach Les Miles should make a switch.
8. Ohio State (6–1) Up Next – Purdue (4–2)
Let’s just put it this way, I am not a fan of the Buckeyes. When I was getting updates about how Ohio State was losing and eventually upset, I was extremely happy. Then again, it was not surprising at all. Whenever the Buckeyes have been No. 1 in the nation recently, they have promptly lost. They lost in the national title game a few years ago when they were ranked No.1, they lost to Wisconsin on Saturday and it has happened on at least one other occasion. After their lost though do I believe their national title hopes are over? No. Do I hope they are? You betcha.
9. Michigan State (7–0) Up Next – Northwestern (5–1)
Looking at their numbers, they aren’t overly impressive. They rank in the No. 17 in the nation in defense scoring though. That is the key, their defense. They dismantled Michigan, and man handled the Wisconsin Badgers (15). They have one tough game left against Iowa Oct. 30, but other than that, their schedule isn’t very difficult. They could easily be in a BCS bowl game this year.
10. Utah (6–0) Up Next – Colorado State (2–5)
Most people have Ohio State (9) and Utah flip-flopped here. I just can’t put Utah any higher than 10. I don’t even want them here but the rest of the field isn’t helping themselves. Yes they are scoring a lot and not giving up much on defense, but their opponents are pathetic. The best team they have played so far is Pittsburgh and they are only 3–3. I know I have said that power rankings was like a beauty pageant and you have to impress with big numbers, but I just can’t fully buy this team until they face some real competition.
11. Nebraska (5–1) Up Next – (19) Oklahoma State (6–0)
How did they lose to Texas? Well the Longhorns were the first team to stop Nebraska QB Taylor Martinez. He only had 63 passing yards and 21 rushing yards, after averaging in the previous five games, 132 yards passing and 147.4 yards rushing. That is a huge drop off. His Heisman chances took a big hit here. I am happy to say that their defense still hasn’t allowed more than 21 points in a game this year. If you don’t remember, I predicted that the Cornhuskers wouldn’t give up more than 25 points in a single game. As of now, I'm looking pretty good. Oklahoma State (19) might have something to say about that though.
12. Stanford (5–1) Up Next – Washington State (1–6)
They are coming off a bye so expect a huge win this week. Washington State probably would have been beaten by at least 25 points but now since Stanford is coming off a bye, a 40 point victory isn’t out of the realm of possibility. Stanford should just be able to stroll through in a couple weeks against Arizona (16).
13. Iowa (5–1) Up Next – (16) Wisconsin (6–1)
This looks like the second best game of the week. Two tough conference rivals. But like I said a couple weeks ago, Iowa beat Michigan and with relative ease. Michigan QB Denard Robinson had a good rushing day, but backup QB Tate Forcier had the majority of the throws. For Iowa, QB Ricky Stanzi had 248 passing yards and three passing TDs, and RB Adam Robinson had 143 rushing yards and two TDs. Their scoring defense fell a few slots, but they are still No. 6 in the nation by only allowing 13.2 points per game.
14. Florida State (5–1) Up Next – BYE WEEK
They have a top 15 defense and QB Christian Ponder. I was wondering why Ponder hadn’t thrown for more yards this season until I watched Florida State vs. Boston College this weekend. His receivers just aren’t that great. If Ponder had a true weapon like Alabama WR Julio Jones or Georgia WR AJ Green, he would be having a ridiculous season. From here on out, their schedule doesn’t look overly difficult. They could win out and jump into the top 10 by the end of the year. That is if they don’t pull a Florida State and mess it all up.
15. Wisconsin (6–1) Up Next – (13) Iowa (5–1)
They were my favorite team if the week. RB John Clay had 104 yards rushing on 21 carries and 2 TDs. Not great numbers, but good enough. The best thing that Wisconsin did was stop Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor. He was on a fast pace to a possible Heisman trophy until Ohio State ran into Wisconsin. Hopefully, Wisconsin showed everyone how to handle the Ohio State QB.
16. Arizona (5–1) Up Next – Washington (3–3)
I'm still surprised at how good their defense is. They are giving up the 7th fewest point per game in the nation at 13.3 per game. They can also light up the skies with an aerial assault, courtesy of QB Nick Foles. They average a little over 300 yards passing a game. He is definitely a legit QB prospect, but could he be only the 4th best QB in the PAC–10? He gets a chance to prove himself this week against Washington and Jake Locker, in two weeks against Stanford and Andrew Luck and finally three weeks against USC and Matt Barkley.
17. Arkansas (4–2) Up Next – Ole Miss (3–3)
Heisman hopeful QB Ryan Mallett was injured in the second quarter, yet their backup QB, Tyler Wilson, still had over 300 yards passing. Unfortunately for the Razorbacks, Cam Newton and Auburn scored 28 points in the fourth quarter, in the fourth quarter! What did Arkansas have to counter? Eight points and an 18 point loss. Their once vaunted defense took a big hit by allowing 65 points to Auburn. I still have hope for them this season if Ryan Mallett returns OK.
18. Oklahoma State (6–0) Up Next – (11) Nebraska (5–1)
The BCS standing have them at 14, and the USA Today poll has them at 15. How? Is it a love fest for the state of Oklahoma? They score a lot because they pass for a lot of yards. But here’s the kicker, they haven’t played anyone. They might have played the weakest schedule in all of college football. The toughest teams they have played are Texas A&M and Texas Tech, and both of them are 3–3. Seriously? And the only reason they I have them here is because they are undefeated. But that will definitely change this week. Nebraska comes into town, and they are upset I'm sure.
19. Missouri (6–0) Up Next – (3) Oklahoma (6–0)
They have got to be a clone of Oklahoma State. They haven’t played anyone and are undefeated. Only two differences, they don’t pass as well as Oklahoma State, and they have the second best scoring defense in the nation. We will see their true colors against Oklahoma (3) this weekend.
20. Virginia Tech (5–2) Up Next – Duke (1–5)
Finally some recognition for the Hookies. I have had them ranked all season and now all the rankings have them in the Top 25. None of the major rankings have them higher than 23, but as Virginia Tech continues to win they will rise at least into the Top 15. They have won five in a row and probably only have one more difficult game this season and that is against “The U.”
21. South Carolina(4–2) Up Next – Vanderbilt (2–4)
What did I tell you? They are the Michigan of the SEC. A high profile coach, a surprise player (RB Marcus Lattimore) and a good win that gets them highly ranked. Then they blow it. I said they were over ranked and would prove me right. Well they did, losing 31–28 to Kentucky. Don’t have much else to say on this so-so team besides that 11 spot tumble was amazingly satisfying.
22. Texas (4–2) Up Next – Iowa State (3–4)
I didn’t think they would be able to recover after losing back to back games against UCLA and then heated rival Oklahoma. Then they surprise me by beating Nebraska who I had No. 5 in the nation at the time. They still aren’t real impressive in any aspect, but head coach Mack Brown is one of the best and will motivate this team the rest of the way.
23. West Virginia (5–1) Up Next – Syracuse (4–2)
The Mountaineers have a few things going for them: they have Noel Devine, Geno Smith and a stingy defense. The defense is only allowing 12.3 points per game, good enough for 3rd in the nation. They have only lost one game and that was to a very good LSU team. Sad thing? They are the best team in the Big East. So could a team not ranked even in the Top 20 get into a BCS bowl game? I sure hope not. That would just be another knock on the ridiculous system. Can you say, “we need playoffs now!”
24. Miami (Fl.) (4–2) Up Next – UNC (4–2)
Every poll has them ranked except the BCS. Of course they don’t. Because computers are a stupid way of evaluating a team and determining who goes to the title game. Anyways, their two loses were against two very good teams, Ohio State (when they were ranked No. 2 in the nation) and Florida State (currently No. 14 in the nation). It would have been nice if they could have won one of those, but they should still be ranked. They have a weak schedule for rest of the season, but still have a chance to prove themselves with a win over Virginia Tech (20).
25. Mississippi State (5–1) Up Next – UAB (2–4)
They run the ball well and play good defense. At 5–2 they are still only 4th in the SEC West. They will definitely go to a bowl, but No. 25’s in the power rankings are constantly changing so who knows where they will be when it is all said and done.

NFL Power Rankings Week 5
We saw history on “Monday Night Football,” when Minnesota quarterback Brett Favre became the first QB in history to eclipse the 70,000 passing yard mark and the 500 passing touchdown mark.
On a sour note, he did tie and then became the leading fumbler with 162 and counting.
Also this week, we saw Randy Moss get traded from the New England Patriots and back to the Minnesota Vikings, and Deion Branch get traded from the Seattle Seahawks and back to the New England Patriots.
I took some time off the power rankings, but we are up and running again so what is going on in the league?
1. Pittsburgh Steelers – Record (3–1)
It’s incredible how good they could be. Their defense is just absolutely dominant again and they are getting a two-time Super Bowl winning QB. Ben Roethlisberger will be back now after his suspension. This is just a scary thought. They are my favorite to go to the Super Bowl again. Big Ben might be a little rusty, but apparently he saw a QB guru during his suspension and that should help. Look out NFL.
2. New York Jets – Record (4–1)
Their defense could be just as dominant as the Steelers. Against the Vikings on MNF, they held the Vikings down until Favre pulled some magic out of a helmet. They probably have the best secondary, and no one can run on them. Their offense scares me, but where was this LaDainain Tomlinson the past few years for San Diego? He seems resurrected. QB Mark Sanchez wasn’t great against the Vikes, but he still hasn’t thrown an interception this year, and seems to be getting better every week.
3. Atlanta Falcons – Record (4–1)
This high after they only beat the Browns by 10? Umm, yes, plain and simple. They have won four in a row and their only loss was to the Steelers. Their four offensive stars: TE Tony Gonzalez, WR Roddy White, RB Michael Turner and QB Matt Ryan all look like they are going to have great years. Most importantly, Turner is back to his old self by averaging 4.5 yards a carry. Their secondary hasn’t been amazing, but they have the Top 10 rush defense. They could easily win the NFC South.
4. Baltimore Ravens – Record (4–1)
It is tempting to put the Ravens at No. 3, but the Falcons lost to the best team in overtime, and the Ravens lost to the second best team in regulation. They seem to be back to their Super Bowl contender label. Their only problem? Is Joe Flacco ready to step it up and lead this team on offense? The most exciting for the Ravens next week? Safety Ed Reed should be back. He makes the dominating defense that much better. That defense is also up there with the Jets and the Steelers.
5. New England Patriots – Record (3–1)
There supposedly was a fight between QB Tom Brady and WR Randy Moss, before they traded Moss, about appearance. What a joke. Sources say that isn’t true, but wow. To replace Moss, the Pats traded for WR Deion Branch. Yeah about that… he has 13 receptions for 112 yards and a TD. I understand he is a former Patriot and had chemistry with Brady, but this was a stupid move. He does not have Moss’s abilities, presence or deep threat capabilities and he doesn’t scare you. At all. None. Zip. Zero. Nada. Are you getting my point? And it’s not like they didn’t have three other short receivers. I'm going to have to say this was a pointless move.
6. Indianapolis Colts – Record (3–2)
Their secondary has been ravaged by injuries, and their receiving corps hasn’t been the healthiest either. No one on the Colts played great, not even QB Peyton Manning, which lead to a score that was pretty much 12-9 with a garbage TD in the last four minutes. But they did beat the last undefeated team, the Kansas City Chiefs. They didn’t do it in a pretty fashion, but they did win. They still could end up going 13-3 and I wouldn’t be surprised.
7. Green Bay Packers – Record (3–2)
They still have no running game and now QB Aaron Rodgers could miss some time after his O-Line failed him, which lead to his concussion. Backup QB Matt Flynn might have to start next week against the Dolphins. The Packers staff says he could start someday, somewhere els,e of course, but we haven’t seen it and I’d rather have Rodgers any day.
8. New Orleans Saints – Record (3–2)
Two straight loses. The loss to the Falcons wasn’t a huge upset, but the Saints followed that up against the Cardinals with a complete dud. QB Drew Brees didn’t even play up to his abilities. It was just a weird game. It must have been embarrassing for them to lose to an undrafted rookie QB in his very first start though. Hopefully, head coach Sean Payton can get them playing back to their abilities.
9. Tennessee Titans – Record (3–2)
They can thank the refs for their win against the Cowboys. I believe if it wasn’t for that ridiculous excessive celebration call, the Titans would have lost. It would be nice if RB Chris Johnson wasn’t so bi-polar. Every other game is a pitful showing. In his three good games he has a combined 398 rushing yards, six touchdowns and three wins. In the two feeble games he has a combined 89 yards with no touchdowns and two loses. And to top that, he isn’t the receiving threat he was last year. The Titan’s season rides on his shoulders. He needs to be more consistent if they expect to make the playoffs.
10. Houston Texans – Record (3–2)
They just might have the worst secondary in history. They give up an average of 329.6 yards through the air. Also the pick of “the most NFL ready cornerback in the draft” Kareem Jackson continues to prove me right that he was the wrong choice. Man, I love it when I’m right. The worst thing about this team? They are supposedly a high scoring team but they have given up more points than they have scored (118 points for; 136 points against). This seems like the typical Texans team. Everyone wants to pick them to go to the playoffs, but they always break your heart.
11. Kansas City Chiefs – Record (3–1)
They can defend the rush and they can run the ball. But they can’t seem to pass the ball or defend it very well. They seem to be very much improved on defense though. They have seemed to have the mentality of bend but don’t break on defense. That has worked for many teams, and it showed when they held the Colts to 19 points and very well could have only given up 12. With how poorly the Chargers have played, they could win the division.
12. Chicago Bears – Record (4–1)
They beat the lowly Panthers with their backup QB going 6–16 for 33 yards. Thankfully, RB Matt Forte decided to have a great game. Forte had 22 carries for 166 yards and two TDs. It helps when your defense gets three picks and five sacks. The Julius Peppers signing looks like a great one too.
13. New York Giants – Record (3–2)
The G-Men went from a team that everyone was asking why they were so bad, to beating everyone’s favorite team. And they didn’t just beat the Texans, they destroyed them. They held QB Matt Schaub to 15–34 for less than 200 yards and the NFL’s leading rusher to 25 yards on 11 carries. Then QB Eli Manning torched the Texans pathetic secondary. WR Hakeem Nicks now looks like an elite WR in the making.
14. Philadelphia Eagles – Record (3–2)
After my last power rankings Michael Vick was named the starting QB for the Eagles. Then due to injury, Kevin Kolb took over. He actually held his own, going 21–31, 253 yards and a touchdown. WR Jeremy Maclin (95 yards) and RB LeSean McCoy (92 yards and a touchdown) both had stellar games for the Eagles. The only problem with McCoy’s game, was the slide he did when he thought he had a first down. Not very smart, but understandable.
15. Washington Redskins – Record (3–2)
It’s funny how supposedly head coach Mike Shanahan doesn’t believe in QB Donovan McNabb. The guy he traded for, and has led a terrible team to a 3–2 record. He’s had a couple bad games, but it doesn’t help when the head coach isn’t very good, and the weapons around the QB are mediocre at best (except for WR Santana Moss). The two losses haven’t been due to McNabb, but more on Shanahan. Funny, I'm not even a McNabb fan.
16. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Record (3–1)
I am happily surprised they beat the team below. I said after the draft that WR Mike Williams could be a star right away, and boy was I right. He might not have all the big numbers, but he always seems to make the big play and be the key to the Bucs win. He did have his bye week already, so you can expect his numbers to jump throughout the season. And his QB, Josh Freeman, seems like he is getting better every week and will be a great QB in the future. This could be a playoff team in two or three years.
17. Cincinnati Bengals – Record (2–3)
If a team couldn’t be in more of a need for a bye this upcoming weekend than the Bengals, then I don’t know who does. T.O. is already gripping about his pay and the team’s offense. He wondered why no one wanted him this offseason, well this is why knucklehead. You’re a loud mouth who doesn’t deserve to be in the league. In all of this, I am surprised Chad Ochocinco hasn’t punched T.O. in the throat. What is even crazier, the two of them have a talk show on the channel “Versus.” No way they get into the playoffs with T.O. acting like a fool.
18. Miami Dolphins – Record (2–2)
I had hope for them to be good, but QB Chad Henne is killing me. He teases you like Alex Smith (see below). Their offense isn’t terrible, and their pass defense is great but they can’t stop the run very well. Their next game is against the Packers after a bye week. This will be a big test for Henne. He has the weapons and a good line. Can he live up to it? Or will they have to bring in Tyler Thigpen again?
19. Oakland Raiders – Record (2–3)
The Raiders finally stopped their 13 game losing streak to the San Diego Chargers. But it was the all important special teams – (and, yes, NFL Analysts, we all know special teams are important. It doesn’t go unnoticed if you say it every game.) – that got them the victory. They had two blocked punts that led to a safety and a recovery for a touchdown. They also had a fumble recovery on defense returned for a 64–yard touchdown by Tyvon Branch. The Raiders seem to have a great RB tandem of Michael Bush and Darren McFadden. Now, if they could only get a good QB.
20. San Diego Chargers – Record (2–3)
I feel sorry for QB Philip Rivers. His team is always failing him. At KC, the center wouldn’t snap the ball due to the noise. The special teams failed him by allowing two blocked punts. And finally, his line failed him again in the final minutes, allowing a near sack that lead to a fumble. He is leading the league in passing yards, and has done this without his franchise left tackle or his franchise type wide receiver (though Malcolm Floyd has performed admirably, I’d much rather have Vincent Jackson). But
LT Marcus McNeil will be back soon, and the Chargers always seem to get on a role at the end of the year.
21. Arizona Cardinals – Record (3–2)
How do they pull that off? It was an undrafted rookie QB who lead the Cardinals to the victory over the Saints. Actually, Max Hall didn’t really lead them, but the Saints should have beaten a team with such a green QB. The Cardinals scored 30 points and didn’t even score an offensive touchdown! Insane. Hall should be thankful they have a bye this upcoming weekend.
22. Jacksonville Jaguars – Record (3–2)
I never seem to know what to say about this team. QB David Garrard is a dead man walking in my eyes. He will be replaced in the offseason. RB Maurice Jones-Drew hasn’t had his typical season. And their supposed great weapon at WR Mike Sims-Walker has had a pathetic showing this year. They are 3-2 and tied for the division lead, but don’t expect it to last very long.
23. Minnesota Vikings – Record (1–3)
After a slow start by the Vikings, QB Favre had three touchdowns in the second half. It still wasn’t enough, especially when Favre pulled a typical Favre and threw a pick six. RB Adrian Peterson also had a slow start but had some big gains in the second half. In other news, hopefully CB Cedric Griffin is OK after he went down with an apparent knee injury. Griffin tore his ACL last year in the NFC Championship game and it was just his second game back. With any luck, Griffin will be OK soon.
24. Dallas Cowboys – Record (1–3)
Incredible, they just can’t catch a break can they? In Week 1 against the Redskins they had the fumble incident at the end of the first half that ended up being a TD for the ‘Skins, and in at the end of the game the holding call that cost them the game winning TD. This week? Different date, same story. This week it was an excessive celebrating call on offensive lineman Mark Colombo after he fell on a chest bump with TE Jason Witten. They called it because he left his feet and felt it could have been premeditated. Are you kidding me? After that, the game was over after a long return by the Titans.
25. Denver Broncos – Record (2–3)
Kyle Orton is having a huge year in the air. He is second in the NFL with 1,733 passing yards. That is just odd coming from him. But he could still not overcome the Bronco’s ineptitudes. They lost to the Ravens 41-17, and it will continue to be a long year in Denver. That extension of Orton looks pretty smart right about now.
26. Seattle Seahawks – Record (2–2)
They are coming off a bye week after they beat the San Diego Chargers. The Seahawks have a chance in the weak NFC West and that chance will increase with the acquisition of RB Marshawn Lynch. They then follow that by trading WR Deion Branch back to the Patriots. Next up, the Chicago Bears. They will need to plan for QB Jay Cutler if he returns from his concussion.
27. Detroit Lions – Record (1–4)
The Lions got their first win of the season against the worst team in the NFL, in my opinion. They crushed the Rams 44–6. And that was with their backup QB and their best WR out for awhile, due to a shoulder injury. There is still a lot of work to do here. But I think they could be OK in two or three years.
28. San Francisco 49ers – Record (0–5)
I have stuck with San Francisco and stuck with them. But now I give up. There is very little chance that they will come back from three games and win their division. I’ve also given up on QB Alex Smith. If there ever was a tease, he is it. He frustrates you and frustrates you. When you go to bench him, he plays great. I expect the Niners to take a QB in the first round in April’s draft, and that looks like it could be a Top five pick. My only hope for this team is that they keep Mike Singletary as the head coach. I don’t believe he is at fault for this team’s blunders. I could change my mind on that, too, in a couple weeks though.
29. Carolina Panthers – Record (0–5)
They are the youngest team in the league, but does that excuse their poor play? No one seems to be playing well for this team. Rookie QB Jimmy Clausen was bad, but you have to account for his weakened receiving corps. WR Steve Smith was held out due to a bum ankle, and they released WR Dwayne Jarret after he was arrested for another driving incident with alcohol. Luckily for them they have a bye this upcoming weekend.
30. St. Louis Rams – Record (2–3)
So St. Louis, expect to win when you have your rookie QB throw 45 times in a game? Yes, he has to be the future to this pathetic franchise, but 45 times? No way. Steven Jackson had 25 carries for 114 yards. Shoot, you could give it to him 15 more times. But throwing that much when you are down by 18 by halftime? That is terrible coaching. Sam Bradford has looked OK so far this season, but he hasn’t faced anyone impressive and I think the coaching will continue to fail him. “Bustford” already has eight picks, a poor completion percentage of 56.7 and a rating of 66.5. Yeah, I'm not convinced.
31. Cleveland Browns – Record (1–4)
My favorite punching bag. Well, besides the Rams and “Bustford.” I blame this team on the overrated Mike Holmgren. Everyone is blinded by his past accomplishments. That is everyone, except me. You cannot, I repeat, you cannot expect to win when your QB’s are Seneca Wallace and Jake Delhomme. If Delhomme isn’t released this week, then ownership needs to oblige Holmgren with his pink slip. My hopeful regards to rookie QB Colt McCoy who will start this weekend. And to welcome him? The Steelers. I feel for you Colt. Good luck with that.
32. Buffalo Bills – Record (0–5)
The bye this upcoming weekend couldn’t come any sooner. Well, actually it really doesn’t matter. They have a chance to tie the 2008 Detroit Lions by going 0-16. They do seem to be better under former-Harvard QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. He has thrown seven TDs to two interceptions. Also, with the trade of RB Marshawn Lynch, they can now focus on giving the ball to rookie RB C.J. Spiller, that is if their dumb head coach, Chan Gailey, would stop being so pigheaded.

College Power Rankings Week 6
Been lazy the past few weekends, but time to get back at the power rankings. As usual there were some upsets, but I was genuinely surprised this weekend. Oregon continues their climb to greatness, Boise state continues to win and I told you so about the Michigan Wolverines.
1. Ohio State (6–0) Up Next – (18) Wisconsin (5–1)
After the upset of Alabama, Ohio State takes over the top rank in the nation. Do I believe they are truly the best team in the nation? No. Sure they will win regular season games, but I can’t trust them in the title game. That is my requirement to be considered the best team. Could they surprise me and run the table and win it all? Maybe. But it always seems that when they face a fast team, they look incredibly slow. They look faster this year but they haven’t played a great team or even an SEC team. QB Terrelle Pryor does look like a beast, though.
2. Oregon (6–0) Up Next – BYE WEEK
RB LaMichael James has got to be in the conversation for the Heisman. He is behind only Michigan QB Denard Robinson, if you can really call him a QB. James is on pace for over 1,600 yards this season, and is only a sophomore. He isn’t the biggest guy but he sure does know how to run the ball and score. The little guy has nine touchdowns already with six games left. He could easily have over 20 touchdowns by the end of the year.
3. Boise State (5–0) Up Next – San Jose State (1–5)
They dropped a spot and now move back up after the ‘Bama loss. Unless Ohio State or Oregon lose, they probably are stuck here, and that is if they don’t lose too. I would love to see them get a chance in a national title game but no one including me thinks they will get a chance. They have shown in the past they can hold their own against the major conferences. I don’t even know if they go undefeated that they will even get a chance, if say a good SEC team had two loses. I want to see it, but I doubt it.
4. TCU (3–0) Up Next – BYU (2–4)
Consider TCU the older Boise State. They were the little school that surprised people. And with that, they are in the same boat as Boise. They will probably get into a BCS bowl game but I'm hesitant to say they could be in the title game. The Horned Frogs steamrolled Wyoming this weekend 45-0, another typical blowout by TCU. On a side note, I feel sorry for Wyoming, they have lost to Boise State 51-6, TCU and Texas (when they were good) 34-7. This just shows how weak TCU’s schedule has been, another reason why they won’t have a chance in the title game.
5. Nebraska (5–0) Up Next – Texas (3–2)
Their defense still has not allowed more than 21 points in a single game. Then again, their schedule hasn’t been the toughest. It was impressive that they held Kansas State’s RB Daniel Thomas to 76 yards on 22 carries though. In other news, Freshman QB Taylor Martinez might just be the fastest player in the nation. Yes, faster than Denard Robinson. He scored on a touchdown against Kansas State where I swore he was going to be caught and tackled, but he just blazed a path for the TD. I was amazed. He hasn’t thrown much yet, but his wheels (No. 5 in the nation in rushing) are more than enough for them to continue winning.
6. Alabama (5–1) Up Next – Ole Miss (3–2)
I can’t believe that the Crimson Tide lost to the Gamecocks. The Tide’s defense just couldn’t stop South Carolina Freshman RB Marcus Lattimore. He didn’t have an amazing game, but he was solid, productive and averaged 4 yards a carry with three combined TD’s (2 rushing and 1 rushing). I'm not really impressed with South Carolina as much as I am disappointed in Alabama. RB Trent Richardson only had 23 yards on six carries, reigning Heisman Trophy winner RB Mark Ingram could only manage 41 yards on 11 carries while QB Greg McElroy had possibly his best aerial game in his career. This was McElroy’s first loss since the eighth grade.
7. Oklahoma (5–0) Up Next – Iowa State (3–3)
They are coming off a bye after beating Texas 28-20 in the Red River Rivalry game last weekend. QB Landry Jones picked up where he left off last season after he replaced Sam Bradford. It was a seamless transition, further showing that Bradford isn’t all he is hyped up to be. On top of Jones’ production, RB DeMaco Murray is having another fine year (that is until he suffers his annual nagging injury), and short WR Ryan Broyles (No. 12 in the nation in receiving) is having a great year as well.
8. Auburn (6–0) Up Next – (12) Arkansas (4–1)
I had been bagging on the Tigers, until they beat South Carolina. But the real reason I have them up this high, besides their undefeated record, is QB Cameron Newton. He is No. 12 in the nation in rushing and I believe he is getting better as a passer. Other than that? I'm still not that impressed. I have said before I believe head coach Gene Chizik will find a way to screw it all up.
9. LSU (6–0) Up Next – McNeese State (2–3)
There are three things going for the LSU Tigers RB Stevan Ridley, the defense and head coach Les Miles. Ridley is currently No.14 in the nation in rushing with 640 yards. It’s a good thing he is getting yards because their QB is what you call, a dud. QB Jordan Jefferson seems like a complete waste of time. He is barely at 50 percent in completion percentage and not even averaging a 100 yards passing a game. Their defense is No. 14 in the nation in allowing only 15.2 points a game. That might not be the true case, though. They gave up 29 points to the then-ranked No. 14 Florida and 24 points to the then No. 18 in the nation UNC. And my final point was Les Miles. He is crazy. Not always, great but they always win. That trick FG play against Florida was absolutely insane. And on top of the crazy call, was how it actually happened. When it bounced and the kicker caught it I don’t know if I’ve seen anything like it. But like I said, he knows how to win.
10. Utah (5–0) Up Next – Wyoming (2–4)
I really don’t like ranking them this high, but it seems as if I have no option. The teams I would like to have above the Utes have let me down. They are third in the nation in points per game (49) and 15th in giving up points (15.6). That all seems fine and dandy, but they have played one ranked team and that was Week 1. Their schedule has been so weak that their opponents to date have a combined record of 7 – 22. And only one, Iowa State, had a .500 record. Now you get why I don’t like them here?
11. South Carolina(4–1) Up Next – Kentucky (3–3)
Everyone has been praising RB Marcus Lattimore like he is leading the nation in rushing. He doesn’t even have 500 yards. Don’t get me wrong, he is solid and probably will be very good but I don’t think he is really dominant right now. QB Stephen Garcia is also being praised heavily, but he doesn’t even have 1,000 yards yet in five games. Arkansas QB Ryan Mallett had more than that in three games. Soooo…. yea, not amazing. The defense isn’t allowing even 19 points per game, but that really is the only highlight of this squad.
12. Arkansas (4–1) Up Next – (8) Auburn (6–0)
Speaking of that giant QB Mallett, he is third in passing yards in college football with more than 1,700 yards. The Razorbacks have the third best pass offense, and the No. 13 best defense in the nation at only allowing 15 points per game. Their schedule is going to get more difficult now, but I could see them being a top 10 team when it is all said and done. Expect a huge game from Mallett against Auburn this weekend.
13. Michigan State (6–0) Up Next – Illinois (3–2)
After all the sad health concerns with their coach, they continue to roll. They beat (18) Wisconsin last week and (25) Michigan this week. They have a pretty good offense and a defense that isn’t allowing more than 18.3 points per game. They seem to me to be everyone’s Cinderella story already. And you know what? I kind of like it. Their schedule isn’t amazingly difficult rest of the way, but still might end up with two losses.
14. Stanford (5–1) Up Next – BYE
They get a week off after a narrow victory over USC. I have been praising Stanford QB Andrew Luck as much as the next guy, but he was outperformed by my favorite QB in college football, USC QB Matt Barkley. Barkley had some amazing throws and 390 yards through the air to go along with three TDs. Luck was more efficient though, 20-24 285 yards and three TDs. If Luck decides to stay another year next year, that will be a great battle between Barkley and Luck. The next two games for Stanford are against Washington and Washington State. Let’s just say I have a feeling they will be 7-1, then.
15. Florida State (5–1) Up Next – Boston College (2–3)
They are rushing for a lot more yards than I thought, while they aren’t passing for as much as I would have assumed. In fact, they are rushing for more yards per game than passing yards per game. Unbelievable when you take into consideration their QB Christian Ponder. I would have expected Ponder to be throwing for more nearly 300 yards a game, not 216. Hmm… well we will see if by end of the year if that changes. Their defense has been incredibly well too, only allowing 15.7 points per game, No. 16 in the nation.
16. Iowa (4–1) Up Next – (25) Michigan (5–1)
This was the game early in the year that I thought would expose Michigan QB Denard Robinson. Well, good news for the Hawkeyes, Michigan State did that for them. Iowa just has to follow the Spartans lead. They had a bye week, so that game helps them even more. But to win this game the way I think Iowa should, their QB, Ricky Stanzi, will need a huge day in the air. I think they manhandle the Wolverines this weekend with their No. 1 defense in the nation. I am going to enjoy the slaughter of Michigan.
17. Arizona (4–1) Up Next – Washington State (1–5)
QB Nick Foles had a HUGE game, with 440 passing yards but only had two TDs. They lost in a close one to the bi-polar Oregon State Beavers, 27-29. Their offense was good, but their defense just couldn’t hold Oregon State QB Ryan Katz. He countered Foles with 393 yards of his own. I think Arizona will come back down to earth, with a difficult schedule after the next two weeks. I think they could end up with two more loses.
18. Wisconsin (5–1) Up Next – (1) Ohio State (6–0)
Let’s make the Badgers record 5–2 already. I'm not a Buckeyes fan in any sort of way, but I just can’t see Wisconsin beating Ohio State. Wisconsin runs the ball well and has a pretty good defense, but I just have zero confidence in them. Their QB isn’t great in my opinion and I just don’t like them. I don’t have a grudge, just have no confidence in them.
19. Oklahoma State (5–0) Up Next – Texas Tech (3–2)
At this point, I am getting to the teams who could be ranked but shouldn’t necessarily be. Oklahoma State has a really good offense, but their defense? That side of the ball could use some improvement. Then again this team is scary, and not in a good way. They have played no ranked teams, or even a legitimate team. Their offense could be very bad very soon, and their defense could get even worse.
20. Nevada (6–0) Up Next – Hawaii (4–2)
They have played no one good, but they are putting up gaudy numbers. RB Vai Taua is third in the nation in rushing yards with 837 and has 11 rushing TD’s. QB Colin Kaepernick has over 1,300 yards through the air and 639 yards on the ground with 19 combined TDs. They are giving credit to using the Pistol offense, but they haven’t really played a great team yet. They probably continue to put up big numbers, but their true test is on Nov. 26 when they face Boise State.
21. Missouri (5–0) Up Next – Texas A&M (3–2)
According to the numbers, their defense is third best only giving up 11.2 a game. That is laughable. They literally would have been better off playing a high school varsity team. Their opponents have been: Illinois, McNeese State, San Diego State University, Miami (OH.) and Colorado. None of those are what you call offensive power houses. Let’s just say I'm not impressed.
22. Air Force (5–1) Up Next – San Diego State University (3–2)
Air Force’s only lose this year was to Oklahoma, 24-27. For that reason, I am more accepting of the Falcons. They aren’t the team that puts up a lot of huge numbers, except for the running game. They are averaging 352.7 yards a game on the ground. That is impressive, anywhere. They will be tried next week against (4) TCU. So their schedule will be more difficult, but they might only lose one more game this season.
23. Virginia Tech (4–2) Up Next – Wake Forest (2–4)
They aren’t having the year I thought they would have, but I just can’t put a team like Oregon State, West Virginia or Miami (Fl.) Hurricanes ahead of them. Yes, they have that loss to James Madison, but I think I will be proven right when they end up being a Top 25 team again later in the year. They were my pick to win or at least tie for the ACC Championship, so I am sticking to them.
24. Florida (4–2) Up Next – Mississippi State (4–2)
I would ask if anyone has fallen faster than the Gators, but earlier in the year Virginia Tech fell and then Texas crumbled. Three powerhouses I thought could all be in BCS bowl games might not even be Top 25 teams for the AP of BCS rankings. LSU (9) squeaked out a win with their ridiculous fake FG, if not for that play, Florida might be No. 9 again and LSU down here. We will see who the real Florida in the second half of the season.
25. Michigan (4–1) Up Next – (16) Iowa (4–1)
This was my time to finally throw Michigan out of the Top 25. But I didn’t. It’s not because I liked them, it’s so I can say I told you so. Their defense continues to be terrible (No. 75 in the nation in points against with 26.8 per game), their coach is still crazy not in a good way though and their only weapon was QB Denard Robinson.
Robinson was held to 4.1 yards per carry against Michigan State and threw three interceptions. Was I right or was I right? They lost to a good team and everyone was surprised. Well, duh, they aren’t very good. I'm not going to lie, that was a very fulfilling loss. And no, it was not an upset. In fact, it probably should have been a bigger win. Expect Iowa DE Adrian Clayborn and Iowa’s No. 1 defense to just terrorize Robinson. This will be a massacre of the Wolverines.
